How much to tip on a $1000 check -- waiter chased us out of the restaurant to complain

It is the real Leslie, I just checked in to see what finally ended up on my post. Yes, we are really both company presidents. That along with the entire incident is completely true. We do not reside in the U.S. and as stated, my husband is not a U.S. citizen though I am. What this post taught me was first, this is a very emotional issue and perhaps I was not so wrong to consider it at length and seek out all your advice to fully vet the issue; second, lots of people fully agree with my husband's calculations; third, all restaurants should simply add 18% tip, no one feels cheated and if the service is bad, so what, then the evening is ruined anyway and you just don't go back there. I also think we all (my husband included) tend to tip more at places where we regularly go, are repeatedly pleased with the experience and are known to the staff. Finally, not every company president is out there throwing away the stockholder's money (or his own) that is for sure! For those of you who were critical of my husband (I guess myself included) that is probably something positive to think over in light of the recent Wall Street scandals.

I don't know of ANY corporate presidents who have time to vent on a travel forum regarding tips. Furthermore, most corporate presidents know how to tip. Leslie is just another poor pathetic psychopath who makes up stories around here for attention....

I just wanted to say that I have not laughed so hard in my life as when I read some of the responses here. Especially funny is: Author: Leslie's Husband ([email protected]) Date: 06/27/2002, 10:33 am.
These thread is priceless. Therefore I will leave no tip.

To Puddin: Gracias. So glad you appreciate my plight. Unfortunately, my drug harvesting did not work out as I had hoped. Who knew drug traffickers also expect to be tipped? So now I am working on Plan B. Would you like to marry me so I can get a green card? I promise to tip you.

The whole tipping thing begins to take on a different flavor at high end restaraunts. The over inflated prices of drinks can represent 30-40% of your bill. The service provided for a family of four with two kids is often harder than a party of six well mannered adults yet the bill is much different. It's not tip for service, it's tip for whatever the pricing schedule is where you are eating. Wait staff at high end places are spoiled beyond belief as they could never go back to a middle of the road establishment and only make 200 in tip for the night. Just last night in NYC I had three margaritas at a high end place and paid over 40 dollars, and the glass was small with all of 4 oz of drink and alot of ice. It's a business model guys. Don't try to fight it, they have you right where they want you. The culture won't change in the patrons favor, it has already gone from a 15% norm to 20% with the industry telling you it should be even more. Good luck.

1. Many years ago when Tour d'Argent was one of a handful of greatest rest. in the world we got chased on the way to the elevator for not leaving enough tip. Of course, they were "bitching" in French which I did not understand, so they might have been yelling about something else. They spilled choc. sauce on the table cloth also. I was surprised. Anyway, I gave them a few more francs.
2. A question I've had for many years. What if I go to Sam's Diner and Flo is my waitress. She's great. Doesnt refer to us as "guys", gives the hash to the right person etc. The bill is 12$. I leave a tip of 2.50$. Than the next week I go to L'Idiot (Leedeeoh). The service is exactly the same as Flo's at Sam's. Pierre doesnt call us "Les guys" etc. He brings the Jambon avec les ouefs picade and doesnt have to ask who get the jambon? etc etc The check is 350$. So since the service is the same as Sam's shouldnt I leave a 2.50$ tip. Or vice versa shouldnt I leave Flo a 70$ tip. Help me out here. I'm eating out tonight.

Geez, maz, talk about lighten up. You get riled up over something that happened 11 years ago?
And 237 replies -- that's one reply every 2 and a half weeks or so. Big deal.
You say this is the most boring thread ever. Did someone force you at gunpoint to read all 237 replies?
