How much construction!!!!
 

Just exactly how much construction is going on in the Waikiki area now?

We're staying at the Waikiki Beachcomber in August.

So far, I've read of the beachwalk area as having a large amount of construction, the possibility that the International Marketplace being demolished for something else this year (right next door!) and now I just read that the Sheraton Waikiki is undergoing extensive renovations.

I'd hoped to visit the Halekulani for their fine restaurants, but that might be a problem with all that construction surrounding it.

What else is going on? Waikiki is beginning to sound like it's going to be especially noisy and messy this year and possibly for a while.

You'll get a lot better response if you change the title of your post to something like "construction ion waikiki area"

When this first came up on the board, someone posted a couple websites that are tracking the project and illustrate the blocks involved. You might search for that thread again (unless you've already read those sites).

I don't see how street construction even for several city blocks could effect things INSIDE places, especially like at the Halekulani at dinnertime.

More Waikiki construction mess -- they're tearing down the movie theatre (can't remember what will take it's place..).

The good news is, no construction occurs after about 3-4pm -- definitely go and enjoy dinner at the Halekulani!!

It's good to know the constuction shuts down in the midafternoon.

Construction is a reality of modern life, but I'd hoped to get away from all that here in Milwaukee & in Chicago. Both cities have serious freeway work going on.

I just find myself tired of stuff being torn up and all the noise and mess it makes.

Maybe this is like weddings. There are no "perfect" weddings, you just enjoy what is.

BTW, where is that movie theater located?

On Kalakaua Avenue -- the "main drag" through Waikiki, runs parallel to the beach. It had been closed for a year or so already...built in the 1970's, it didn't have enough historical value to save it from the wrecking ball.

Demolishing an old building - no problem.

Is there a plan to replace that theater with something else?

What do they plan to put in place of the internation market?

Waikiki Theatre is being torn down and will become a three story shopping/restauant building.

Although there is major construction in the Waikiki area, I wouldn't worry too much about not being able to go to or do things in the Waikiki area.
You may have to walk around construction areas. But you should still be able to get to any restaurant, shopping, etc.
I think I read something about the International Market Place being close for a year while the renovate it.
Years ago, it used to be one of the places to go as the top shows were all located there.
Now there is nothing but souvenirs there.
When it reopens, it is supposed to be a step back to the old days of Waikiki.
