Just curious: how many of you ARE visiting this site at work vs. at home?

Slacker Aug 11th, 2000 06:46 PM

Nancy, we all are logging on from work. We will never be fired for it. We are protected under the Americans with Disabilities Act because we are addicted to this Forum.
Home - 100%
Work - 0% (and I work at least 40 hrs/wk outside of home)

Ellen Griswold Aug 11th, 2000 07:01 PM

Nanci, I visit here only from home, as I work from home as a sales-rep.

Me Aug 11th, 2000 07:34 PM

Can't believe this thread was resurrected. But since it was <she says with the grin of a warrior whose been there, done that>: you get what your earn. No more. No less. Entitled? Don't think so <smile> ;)

Cal Aug 12th, 2000 05:04 AM

The only web surfing that I do from work is work related. My work requires a certain amount of web surfing in search of technical information. All my other internet activity is done from home. I am paid to work, not goof off.

Jan Aug 13th, 2000 02:07 PM

I use the internet only from home..
Not from work. Only a selected number of people at the job has access to the internet.. I guess it's a good thing for me... I would spend a lot of time there... especially on fodors :-)
jan

Olga Aug 13th, 2000 02:17 PM

Thumbs up to my "pal" out there.
I'm sure "me again" would be quite upset if they took away 8 weeks vacation time per year... I feel we all work hard no matter if your a file clerk or a doctor. We all are entitled to some type of "benefit" for our services. I'm sure "me again" would not accept a job without ANY vacation time...Lets be realistic here. I work hard 5 days a week, 8 hours a day, spend more time with the people I work with than my family. I feel I am definitely "entitled' to a vacation each year.
Olga

Working Aug 14th, 2000 11:59 AM

I work as a server in a "fine dining" resaurant. 25 to 30 hours a week is considered full time, at $3.30 an hour(up from $2.90 as of this past April,WOO-HOO!) Luckily, I make enough in tips to compensate(actuall paycheck is still, ALWAYS, $0.00!). I can take as much time of as I like, whenever I like, but must consider $$$'s lost on those days I am NOT working(no such thing as paid vacation for floor staff) Can't remember the last time I took off on a New Years Eve(or any other holiday)...a crowded night on the town w/ drunken revallers, VS major $$$$....a no brainer!

Jan Aug 19th, 2000 07:55 PM

Wow, I guess considering the type of job you have, we all aren't as lucky to have a "paid" vacation which is still unfair!!! Everyone should receive some "paid" time off...No matter if its 1 day a month or 5 days a year...
Employers lets stop being so greedy!!!
We are not working robots!!! We all need a break.

Melinda Aug 24th, 2000 02:47 PM

At least 3 times a year.. YAHOOO!!!

Me Aug 24th, 2000 06:36 PM

Every chance I can get. Not because I am entitled to it, but because I have planned and "worked" for my free time.

Olga Aug 25th, 2000 02:42 AM

Exactly!!
You've "worked" hard and "planned" for your vacation, therefore you feel your "entitled" to a vacation... Am I correct???
mark Aug 25th, 2000 04:56 AM

Hi ...

As someone from Europe (UK) I thought I'd state the UK position.

Legally all employees (full/part time) are entitled to 3 weeks a year. I get 25 days, plus 7 bank holidays. For my level (Senior Analyst Programmer) that is the norm.

Normally I take one 2 week break during the summer & go abroad somewhere (or going to Cornwall/Devon/Wales in the UK)

Then during the winter we will try & go somewhere hot for a week. The rest is taken up with visiting parents etc.

My wife gets slightly less than me, but she has recently changed jobs so her allowance will slow build up again.

Also I only do a 35 hour week.

Mark

Jeanette Aug 25th, 2000 11:16 AM

I may be wrong but I think there is a much different sense or semantic in the use of the word "entitlement" by some here. Yes, you are entitled to a vacation if you think you deserve it or if it would be good for your general well-being. No, you are not entitled to have a guarantee of one that I as a taxpayer pay for. This is what an entitlement program is, Olga.

Olga Aug 25th, 2000 12:33 PM

I totally disagree with the above poster... Yes I am a taxpayer too. I work 40 a week (hard and excellent worker). I feel I am "entitled" to vacation time. By the way, what does being a "taxpayer" have to do with this??? I do have a job too.
Plz explain???

Me Aug 25th, 2000 08:24 PM

Olga. Being a hard and excellent worker does NOT entitle you to a vacation. It entitles you to your compensation. If your compensation includes vacation days, then yes, you are entitled to such. If vacation days are not part of the package, then you are entitled to whatever compensation package your place of employment provides. As an employee, working hard and excellent is assumed... or you would be unemployed.

Cal Aug 26th, 2000 04:31 AM

Me Again is absolutely correct. You are only entitled to what benefits are included in your employer's compensation package. No more and no less. The employer is also entitled to something in the deal. Your compensation is what you receive for working hard and being productive. The employer is entitled to your hard work.

Vacation benefits vary drastically from company to company. I have worked for companies in the US where I had 25 days vacation, 12 paid holidays, and a paid week off at Christmas. I have also worked for companies that gave their employess paid 3 month vacations every 3-5 years. And I have worked for some that gave the standard 2 weeks vacation to start and it increased to 4 weeks after 10 years. I now work for myself so I have to give myself my vacations. The whole point is that there are many options open to workers in the US. If you don't like your situation then do something about it and don't whine and complain.

The government is NOT the solution to anything. More times than not, the government is the problem.

Olga Aug 29th, 2000 05:48 PM

Yes, and your give yourself vacation time because you feel your "entitled" to receive vacation benefits..Am I correct??? Yes, I do work very hard, and feel as though I am "entitled" to receive vacation time along with being compensated for my job.
Olga
Me Aug 29th, 2000 06:22 PM

Olga. Can't speak for others, but only for my husband and me. Yes, since my husband has his own business, he can have as much vacation time as he likes. However, there is NO money coming in when he is gone and none of the days are paid.

You misunderstand me if you think I don't think free time is important.

There were many years a vacation was impossible for us because we couldn't take the time off and didn't have the money to go anywhere even if we did.

The compensation package your place of employment provides you is a benefit. It costs money. Employees get their compensation in money and benefits.

thedude Aug 29th, 2000 10:54 PM

I stay in a job (11 years) because i get/earn/am entitled to 7 weeks pto plus 12 holidays a year...besides i am a web producer, love my job which consists of drinking coffee, talking to people and surfin the net.... lol.... btw i also get to tell jokes and discuss sports, current events etc. in connection with my 9-5 job. i am also working on convincing my employer to go flextime so i can leverage that pto and holidays into as many more trips as possible. don't get me wrong i work hard for my employer as well as doing some self employment to finance all this travel stuff.....but gee i am entitled, i add to society, not subtract from it ....btw i am also an employer that gives a lot of paid time off to my employees...am i missing something in my life that i would rather be traveling vs. staying home?? i digress...sorry...to answer the original question...2 big trips (3+ weeks, one little week trip and as many long weekends 4-5 days as possible..

Cal Aug 30th, 2000 01:59 AM

Olga:

You are missing the point entirely. Of course I am entitled to anything that I want with regards to my job. If I want to take 2 months vacation than that is my right to do so. Do you know why? The reason is that I have my own business and work for myself. Therefore any benefits that I receive come directly out of my pocket. By carefully planning my work, I am able to keep the financial impact fairly low but it still is my money.

You feel that you are entitled to something that comes out of somebody else's pocket. You probably are entitled to a vacation and most employers do give vacation time. However that should be negotiated and agreed upon before accepting employment.

Lilly Sep 2nd, 2000 10:13 AM

Hey,
Four times a year!!!
I'm entitled to 6 weeks vacation a year!! So far I've taken 3 vacations this year... We hit Vegas, the millenenum celebration-@ Disney World,
and Canada...
Next- Australia, Alaska, Amsterdam, Paris, Hawaii, Tahiti, Bahamas, San Franscisco, Idaho, or Phoenix... who knows!!
