How many days in Lancaster, Pa?

We're vacationing in Philadelphia and then going to see "Amish country". Is one full day plenty enough time to see the sites around Lancaster county? Or should we plan on two nights.

I'm interested in taking pictures of the rural areas, not so much the city.

Thanks!

We'll probably stay in Intercourse or New Holland - any preferences from people that have traveled here before?

adam - I can't give you any hotel recs in Amish country. I usually stay in Reading when I am in the area. I do have a bike route though that you can use as a driving route on the back roads which are very scenic. I can write it out here if you would like.

Hey Birdie, As long as your bike route doesn't get me lost!

As far as towns... are Intercourse, New Holland, and Bird in Hand pretty comparable? I'd like to stay somewhere with a more "unique" Amish experience (i.e. more rural). We've found a decent B & B in Intercourse and one in New Holland, so I'm wondering if it's pretty much the same or not.

Thanks!

If not too late, Intercourse & Bird-In-Hand are comparable. New Holland has more business and manufacturing and is a little closer to Philly & the Turnpike. But outskirts of New Holland can be very scenic.

Hello We go to the Lancaster area often. We usually stay at Country Living Inn on Old Philadelphia Pike. It's very close to Bird in Hand farmers market. It's a pretty central location. If you go to WWW.800PaDutch.com you will get a lot of good information what is in the area. You can follow almost any back road off the main road and you'll see how the Amish really live.

Not sure if this is too late but I'd recommend the Amish View Inn & Suites on Rt 340. A little pricey but really nice with a comp buffet breakfast everyday. Ask for the farm view rooms.
New Holland, Bird In Hand and Intercourse are great areas for pictures. Go south on RT 896 through Strasburg and there's some great shots along that route.
