How long to get from San Fran airport to Union Square?

Hi there,

I have been searching these boards planning my trip to San Fran and just have one question I cant find an answer to...out flight lands at 8pm and we are staying in Union Square. I want to make reservations for that night...how much time does it take to drive from the airport to Union Square on a Friday (on average)?

Can I make reservations for 9:30 for dinner?

Thank you so much!!
Jamie

Probably, but when you call to make reservations why not let them know what you're doing. That way, if you're late, they will likely hold your table. There are so many unknowns in your situation. Will the flight be on time? Will you check your bag? Will there be an accident on the freeway.

I think you can take the BART now from the airport to Union Square...you sure don't want to rent a car and drive, parking in the city is expensive. I think you'll be rushed to make a 9;30 dinner reservation... esp. if its a great restaurant..why not go there the next night and maybe eat near your hotel the first night?? I would make the reservation closer to 10 if I were you, and give yourself time to check in and freshen up before dinner..

Are you checking bags? Where are you flying from? (International? if so you have to factoring immigration and customs) What time of year?

Depending on the answers to the above you could be at your hotel by 9 p.m. -- or 11 p.m. or anywhere in between.

Give us more details.

I personally would not try to get to a nice restaurant after landing at SFO that late. There is always room service or just walking to a nearby place.

Hi jamikins, who knows? Friends met me at a hotel in SF..there flight arrived around 8:00am at SFO. I thought they would probably be at the hotel sometime after 10:00am but they arrived shortly after 9:30am. They came into SF from SFO by taxi.

When you say "drive" do you mean in a rental car? If so you will have to allow time to pick up the rental car. So if that is the case I don't think you will be at the restaurant in time for your 9:30pm reservation. Also, are you planning on checking into your hotel before the dinner? That will take a bit of time also.

P.S. Yes, you can take BART from SFO to SF., the Powell St., BART station is just a few block south on Powell St., from Union Sq. If you have any interest in doing this the website is

Yes, if you are taking a cab, and there are no delays in exiting the terminal, you should be able to get there in time. However, I've never flown from Canada, so not positive about that.

The BART is an amazing public transit system for the bay area. I had a rental car and still utilized the BART for the majority of my trip, just because it was so convenient and cheap. I wish LA had something this efficient/effective!

OK - then you will be passing through immigration and customs and retrieving bags. So you may be quite delayed (or not- depending on how many other international flights are arriving around the same time) before hitting the taxi rank.

I would not plan on being in Union Sq much before 10 p.m.

Flights from Canada clear immigration before departure, so your arrival will be no different than a normal domestic US flight.

For an on-time arrival at 8, pickup bags by 8:30, and taxi to hotel I'd say 9:30 you could probably make but would be cutting it close and no spare time to freshen up at hotel.

I agree and I've done this a few times in the last three months...BART takes about 40 min, and a cab about 15 minutes..if everything is on time and ho hang ups...have fun !!

I take it you're renting a car since you want driving time. You'll be cutting it a bit close, but you should be able to make a 9:30 dinner reservation in Union Square if you drive directly to the resturant. Friday night parking will be scarce so you may end up using valet (which will be risk since your luggage will be in the trunk). Have fun, food in SF is outstanding!

pg, jamikins is taking a taxi from SFO to Union Square. And I sure agree, the food in SF is usually fantastic!

Which reminds me jamikins, if you get a chance go to Scala's Bistro on Powell (half block north from Union Square, entrance is right before the Sir Francis Drake Hotel) if you like mussels and fries. They are so good!!
