Tandoori - When you live here, it gets amusing to hear people say they want to see "the Smithsonian". I get stopped on the street all the time and asked, "which way to the Smithsonian?". You just stare at the person. This was our internet version of that reaction...

Pang - I did an entire itinerary for a frined of mine that visted. I will see if I still have it and email it to you. Her trip was the same as yours - NY and DC.

The National Buiding Museum is definitely worth a visit.

Also, don't miss the Albert Einstein statute on Constitution. It's very near the Vietnam Memorial and the Lincoln, so it's easy to stop by.

Do the monuments, particularly the Lincoln, at night.

Living here, I'd have to say the best museums, if you have limited time, is the Air and Space Museum (no other museum like it in the world, so it is also the most crowded!), The National Museum of American History (lot's of interactive exhibits), and the National Museum of Natural History. These are great for all ages and LOTS to see!

Check out www.si.edu for any events that may take place during your visit. On Fridays during the summer there is Jazz and IMAX at the National Museum of Natural History! Going there tonight :)
