How long does it take to drive from Ft. Lauderdale airport to Key West?
I read somewhere I should plan anywhere between 2 and 6 hours. This is a big time range and I would like to narrow down the travel time.

More like 3-4 hours. Certainly not 2 hours, 6 is highly unlikely. Drive time is of course somewhat dependant on traffic and weather conditions.

Try using mapquest.com or better yet freetrip.com

They will give you good directions and approximate traveling times.

It does take 6 hours. 3 hours of actual drive time, and 3 hours to stop at the great bars and shops on the way. Don't skip the best part of the keys! Key West will still be there if it takes you 6 hours rather than 3.

I've driven between Miami and Key West several times and it's always taken about 4 hours. I've heard nightmarish stories around weekends or near special events when it's taken much longer. The drive between Ft. Lauderdale and Miami is about 30 minutes.

Scigirl is correct, 3-4 hours. But three hours is for almost no traffic and no stops, 4 hours might be closer if there is a ton of traffic.

I made it in just under 4 hours if I remember correctly.

By the way, I rented with Alamo at the Ft. Lauderdale airport -- the car was fine and the price was right, but their service was REALLY REALLY slow -- it took forever to get out of there and get on the road.

We left at 5:30am and made it under 4 hours. If you leave later you encounter all that traffic on the Overseas Highway. By the way, we rented a car at Avis and got in and out of there in no time flat. I would definitely rent from them again.
