How long at Pier 39?
We were planning to go to Pier 39 and see the aquarium and then do a cruise. We're now thinking about going only to the aquarium in Monterey now, so have a hole in the itinerary. Realistically, how much time can we spend "seeing the sights" of Pier 39? Will it fill the 2 hours we had planned for the aquarium?
Thanks! |
It really depends on your appetite for cheesy tourist-oriented schlock. The only thing I find appealing about Pier 39 is watching the seals, and that's worth perhaps 15 or 20 minutes to me. Although Pier 39 is the busiest tourist attraction in San Francisco, it's among the least worthy.
If it were me, I'd just do a harbor cruise. That's a great experience, and it's much more interesting than the stupid attractions and tourist shops at Pier 39. Alcatraz is also a worthy attraction if that's not already on your agenda. |
I would pick the Aquarium in Monterey vs SF and spending max 2 hours in the Pier 39 area. If you want to make a cruise you may consider doing the Alcatraz cruise from Pier 33 but it is often oversold for the next 2-3 days in summer so make a reservation in advance !

To watch the sea lions - are you traveling with a child? Few minutes. A ride on the carousel.
Maybe you want a lunch at the Rainforest cafe? Is the child too young for Hyde Street pier? |
Oh, I see in another post 3 year old. Hyde St pier is a place where your child can explore ships docked permanently there. Don't miss it.
