How hard is it to find a decent hotel in NYC for less than $100/night?

My husband and I are planning a trip to NYC in August. We stayed there briefly on our honeymoon last summer using Priceline to get the Sheraton New York for $100/night plus tax. Throughly enjoyed it there. We're now wondering about accomodations for this summer - we're definitely on a budget and are wondering if Priceline is the best bet for something clean and safe close to the action, or if there are other options we should consider. I'll do a search through old posts after this, but wanted to see if anyone had any new suggestions right away. Thanks so much!

While there are some places for less than $100, there is little doubt that you'll get more hotel for that price by using Priceline, especially if you aren't that picky about exact location.

Check www.biddingfortravel.com for guidance on hotel prices on Priceline. Great resource. It is currently showing many 3* Priceline hotels at under $100. Of course, most bid feedback is for February and March which is sort of offseason.

$100 is absolutely rock bottom for NYC - even in August. Unless you use Priceline - and I don;t know what sort of inventory they will have available then - you are unlikely to find anyplace in the city you are willing to stay in for that price. (Do not use Priceline myself but many people say their offerings are starting to get sparse and/or much more expensive due to generally higher overall occupancy rates.)

You may want to try some of the major hotel/travel sites and the hotel's own web sites to see what you're Pricelining off of. Some people swear by Hotwire. If I were you I would reserves something canacellable - and then follow/try to work Priceline.

I have probably said this 100 times here but I will say it again, check out the Super 8 Times Square. Very clean, free continental breakfast, free internet use. It is about a block east of Times Square, very close to Rockefeller Plaza. We were very pleased with it when we stayed there and it was less than $100/night.

Don't know if you can still get it for under $100 a night, but I certainly 2nd the vote for Super 8 Times Square. We too were very pleased with it. As atilla said, great location, clean, comfortable rooms and good continental breakfast. When we were there in July of '03 we paid $89 a night for a family of four.

A third recommendation for Super 8, reserve NOW, since the reservations can be canceled easily. I stay between here and HOJO and Days Inn on 8th. BUT rates are creeping up, now it is tough to any of these for under $100 and I haven't seen that rate in some time. Will be there in 2 weeks for $111 and paid the same at HOJO in Dec.

I checked a lot of dates for Super 8 and can't seem to find anything below $159 a night.

Unless you check in tonight, when you can get a room for $110.

I wonder if the Super 8 is like the Comfort Inn Midtown, where I found that rates dropped several times between the date I made the reservation and my arrival date; naturally, I changed the booking each time.
