How far a drive from Fort Lauderdale to Key Largo

Can anyone tell me how far and how long a drive it is from Pompano beach (North of Fort Lauderdale) to Key Largo? We are planning a day trip there to snorkel at the state park reef.
Is it possible to do this in a day trip?
Thanks.

Yes it is possible. I would estimate 1 1/2 to 2 hrs to be safe. More if there's traffic.

AaronM- Thanks.

Do you know if I need to have reservations for snorkeling at the park before hand?
Thanks.

take the FL Turnpike and don't go through Miami...looks longer on a map, but much quicker

Yes, did that drive from Lauderdale-by-the-Sea to Key Largo. It should take you 2 hrs. If you leave a little earlier before rush hour you will not run into traffic. When you come back I'd suggest leaving later too as I-95 in Miami is unbearable at 5-6 p.m.

Leave in the morning, before rush hour and definitely take the Florida Turnpike, pick up the Turnpike Extension when you get into Miami-Dade County and just follow the signs. Just in case you run into traffic or construction, I'd plan on 2 - 2-1/2 hour drive (leave early and enjoy the Keys as much as possible). DON'T TAKE I-95 THROUGH MIAMI!! I think you can get on the turnpike from Sample Road, and I definitely know you can pick it up from Commercial Boulevard in Fort Lauderdale. ENJOY YOUR DAY OF SNORKELING.
