How do you transport a large item across the USA?

Well, this is only vaguely travel related (!), but does anybody know how I could have a wooden, handcrafted canoe moved from Phoenix to upstate NY? Do you call a moving company or some kind of trucking firm? Thanks if you have any clues.

I think you answered your own question there or unless you want to rent a truck yourself and drive it up there. Seriously thou, try some moving services or perhaps ABF.com, a friend of mine shipped with them and they were great.

Sometimes national moving companies will arrange to add an item or 2 along with another load going the same route - you don't get as much choice in dates and it usually takes longer. We had 2 large pieces of furniture moved from NYC to Boston area this way.

I am sure shipping companies can ship anything, so I would check out prices of each.

Check with UPS. It will need to be crated, of course.

FedEx Freight or FedEx Ground can handle it.

wliwl,
It sounds from your description that the canoe is very nice. To consider any of the options below, it would have to be crated of protected for shipping. I would advise that you have the unit packed for shipping before you start clling around.

You best bet is to check with moving companies in your area or whats called LCL truckers (less than contanier load).

Fed Ex and UPS could take it, but you you'll pay big bucks for thier services.

Moving across the US as opposed to up and down is going to be expensive, regardless of how you ship. It's probably too big for Greyhound (82" max lenght). Check Yellow Freight Lines, Freighters and Craters -- both of whom are accustomed to individual shipments of antique furniture etc. It may also depend on just where in upstate New York this is going. A city? A hamlet? That may restrict your options as well. Sometimes, you can do amazingly well by checking air line freight which would minimize the stress on the canoe.

I would call the big moving companies in the Phx area--the national lines only, like Mayflower, Allied, Beekins, etc.--and ask them. A friend of mine inherited some big oriental rugs from her grandmother--problem was that granny lived in Seattle, my friend in Washington DC. She got a moving company to take them on a space-available basis for a very low price--but she had to wait over a month, as I recall, until they had the space to deliver them. Good luck!

try minimoves.com
I used them to move from chicago back to NY. You have no control over how long it takes (what I remember I think it took 3 weeks). the prices are totally reasonable and everything arrived safely.

Check some of the "freight companies" that service your area. People ship much larger objects all the time. The real key, as others have pointed out, is making sure it is properly crated. Look in the yellow pages under "Freight Forwarders".

I transported some antique furniture from my parents' house in Philadelphia to Dallas without a problem.
We are moving to MX next week and transporting some stuff there.
Word of wisdom: when you have six bids, get six more!
