How do you pronounce Kauai?

OK, I know that this is a Stupid question (with a capital "S"), but I'm the type of guy who does all researching and planning for travel online, and I don't really talk to anybody about where I'm going.

As a result, I have no idea how to pronounce Kauai.

Can somebody help me?

I say Ka-why, Hawaiians pronounce it Kah-wa-ee!

askJeeves Dec 28th, 2001 01:47 PM

KA-vie-EEE

and you're Velcome

There is no "V" sound in Kauai! It's pronounced like "cow eye" for mainlanders and "Cow-ah-ee" for locals.

Suzie Dec 28th, 2001 04:43 PM

It's hard to write the way the locals pronounce it but it's kind of like

Kuwhyee

Short u with emphesis on the "why" sound and spoken quickly rather than languishing at each sylable.

Po-tato, po-tahto, to-matoe, to-mahto - let's call the whole thing off!

Mork Dec 28th, 2001 05:48 PM

NO ONE, and I do mean absolutely no one, ever pronounces it "cow eye", whoever said that above.
Say "cow eye" only if you're wearing a hat that says "dork" on the front.

So it rhymes with Hawaii? Or are the accents on different syllables?
