How do we stop.....this stupid

Orbitz Pop Up from coming up every f'ing time. What a pain in the butt.

paaaa Apr 22nd, 2002 01:14 PM

It really takes a lot of effort to click it off.

Statia Apr 22nd, 2002 01:18 PM

Change forums from the very top of the left hand column. Then, you don't get the pop up ad every time.
I posted this same request on 4/12. Pull up "Hey Fodors - Thanks for the Orbitz Pop-Ups". Several people were helpful with sites to go to for downloading.

janis Apr 22nd, 2002 01:19 PM

This is the 2nd thread I've seen about a pop-up. I never get an Orbitz or any other pop-ups (gee I feel cheated)

Anyway - do you go into Fodor's home page or straight into the forums?

RMC Apr 22nd, 2002 01:20 PM

It's not just the Orbitz thing I'm sure. Pop-ups seem to come up everywhere you go on the net these days!

There is software out there to supress pop-ups (even free software) but there's no guarantee it will work on everything.

janis Apr 22nd, 2002 01:23 PM

Could it be an ie thing? I use netscape at home and aol at my Mom's and on neither do I get the pop ups that seem to annoy everybody so much.

download a free utility program called "Pop Up Stopper" from www.download.com and never see another pop up ad again. Well, it doesn't work with 100% accuracy, but I never see the Orbitz pop ups from Fodors.com. I highly recommend it.

Pop Up Stopper is free and it really only takes a few minutes to install it.

Another program called webwasher actually removes advertisements such as banner ads from the screen. This helps to speed up downloads and make web pages appear faster.

This topic was discussed sometime last week.

I only get the pop-ups when I go to travel talk home to get to the other forums that I do not have saved as favorites. I have three forums saved as favorites to save time, and remarkably I do not get pop-ups. Try it, it might work for you too. HTH

I guess fodors has the pop ups so they can generate some income and keep this great travel talk website free for us. It's a small price to pay in order to read these wonderfull posts.

I never see the pop ups and I sign in from AOL.

cd Apr 22nd, 2002 01:55 PM

I never get pop-ups and AOL is my server.

RMC Apr 22nd, 2002 02:10 PM

I'm also on AOL and I get pop-ups all the time. I just installed that Pop-up stopper and I'm still getting the Orbitz banner. Do I need to customize? Is something likly over-riding the pop-up stopper?

I'm with Lucky..it's a royal pain in the........

George Apr 22nd, 2002 02:58 PM

You do need to configure your Popup Stopper. Find the little icon in the lower right corner of your taskbar. Open it up and make sure "Do not allow browser popup..." is checked.

Remember that if you DO want another window open, you'll need to hit a CTRL key to override it on an individual basis.

RMC Apr 22nd, 2002 03:12 PM

Well I can tell that Pop-up is up and running because instead of pop-up windows I now get an error box everytime it comes across a pop-up box.

I know this is a travel website but does anyone have any idea what this error might mean:

A Runtime error has occured.

Do you wish to Debug? ( I say no to make it go away)

Line 498
Error: The callee [server]not server application]] is not available and disappeared; all connections are invalid. The call did not execute.

I don't use AOL and I do use Internet Explorer as well as Netscape and I don't get pop-ups at all. Could it be a Mac (no pop-up)/PC thing?

janis Apr 22nd, 2002 06:07 PM

I don't think it is a Mac/PC thing. I have a Mac w/ netsacpe and my Mom's is a PC w/ aol and neither of us ever get pop-ups.

I have a dell computor. I downloaded pop up stopper and lost my sound. It took me almost 12 hours to fix it. I had to uninstall, and then reconfigure my sound system. Somehow or other, the pop up stopper totally trashed my sound system.

Dell told me I would have to reformat my hard drive and reinstall windows.

I thought, no way.

I didn't have to do that, I was able to get it going again but so very difficult.

Be very careful with any of these downloads. It depends on the operating system you have, the type of computer, etc., how well they work. Many of them conflict with your existing software.

If you are operating a Dell system, I would not use this download.

Really, although the pop up is annoying, it doesn't take long to close.

A lot less time than it took me to fix what the download screwed up.

RMC Apr 23rd, 2002 03:41 AM

Traveller....... I'll give you one guess what type of computer I'm using!

I do have sound but the pop-up killer isn't working at all. The little "X" box is down by my clock so I know it's running, it's just not working properly.

I guess I'm just grateful that I don't have to rebuild my system.
