marilyn, who said that they supported families on 30K? None are even married that I know of.

My point is that not all tough jobs pay minimum wage.

I ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS leave the tip at the end of my stay. I think its ridiculous to leave a tip before the maid has ever even cleaned the room, and I don't think I should have to bribe someone to do their job properly. If the room is not cleaned to my satisfaction, then I call and complain. If the maids/housekeeping have done their jobs well, then I'm happy to leave a generous tip.

You often never even see the maid so that's probably the occupation that get's stiffed most often. The valet practically has his hand out, you would certainly feel cheap not tipping a bellman or your hairdresser or the paper boy, or a waiter at a local restaurant that you frequent. But a hotel, especially if you're staying for just one night....it's easyfor a cheapskate to "forget" the housekeeper, isn't it? Just pack your bags and leave.

I usually tip $5/day minimum and find that gives me a very clean room and additional toiletries/supplies. I don't mind a bit.. its worth it to me.
