How do I get to DC from VA?
 

We are (RV) camping in a town about 25 miles south of DC. It is near Mason Neck. Do we drive to DC and park? Or do we drive to a nearby town and take mass transit in? Please help...

Go to Vienna and take Metro. The Vienna metro station is right off of 66.

I would drive in, especially on the weekend. The Vienna Metro station would be out of your way. The Springfield Metro would be more convenient.

Sorry Nicolette - so true about Springfield metro...Now you have one vote for metro and one for driving in! Are you going to be driving your RV in or a car?

We will be driving our car in. Any idea on the cost to take the metro. Also, once in DC, is it convenient to walk? We are used to several mile hikes so walking is no big deal.

I am unable to locate the springfield metro on my map. We will actually be in Lorton.

It is about $2.00/person on the weekend to take the Springfield Metro stop to the Mall. $3.00 dollars during rush hour.

Convenient - depends on what you are doing.
Most of touristy DC can be accessed through the Metro. A few area are a hike like Georgetown and Adams Morgan but only 10-15 minute walk.

I agree that you could walk and/or metro to most of the places visitors want to see around the mall (Smithsonian, National Gallery, monuments, Capitol, etc)

I dispise driving on I-95 and avoid it whenever I can. An alternative for you coming from Lorton would be to head towards DC in Route 1 North. Park at the Huntington Metro Station and take the subway into town on the Yellow Line. Here's a link with a map:

The Springfield metro is also a good option tho one drawback is the traffic at the Springfield mixing bowl can be a nightmare for the uniniated. The washingtonpost.com link above should get you a map with directions to Springfield too.
