How do I get the upgrades?

Hi, I have a basic question. I see so many posts talk about getting upgraded and I am curious as to how that works. Do you wait until you show up at the front desk and you are their mercy to upgrade you or is it something else? I am in the process of booking a honeymoon and I am wondering if I book the high end to begin with or do I hope that they upgrade me when I get there? Thanks for the help.
Suz

Generally, most upgrades come with "status". If you are an elite with a partcular chain, you have the best chance. It's possible just asking and making sure your notes (given when booking)mention that it's your honeymoon might do it. When and where do you plan to go? I might be able to help.

Hi,
Thanks for the response. I am really new to this forum - just having stumbled onto it while trying to research some hotels. This is a second marriage and we are just trying to finalize wedding date and honeymoon plans. Looking at Phoenix/Scottsdale or somewhere in Florida probably either in October or November. Considered the Caribbean but prefer to stay in the states. Thanks for the help!!!
Suz

Still looking for some help.... I am guessing I have to go with the luck of the draw since I have no 'status'.

Join a frequent stay program at the particular hotel you want to stay at (Wyndham By Request, Hyatt Gold Passport, Holiday Inn, Starwood, etc).

Susie, I got an upgrade at a very good hotel in Manhattan by mentioning to everyone I spoke to that it was my husband's 40th b'day--I mean, I called to book, to confirm, to book a car from the airport, to speak to the concierge, and I shamelssly plugged it every time. I never asked for an upgrade--I would just say "Thanks so much for your help, etc., I want this stay to be perfect because..." It was luck of the draw that they picked up on it, but you should try it...

See if you can still get into Hilton's unpublized promo. The code is CNTU. It can easily move you to gold with them. Then choose ane of their resorts. Go to flyertalk Hilton's forum for info.
