My wife and I will be in San Francisco in mid-February and will be staying at the Sheraton Fisherman's Wharf. We plan on going to the deYoung museun for the King Tut exibit and will not have a car. We will purchase muni passports and I have gone to the Muni web site to try to find out how to get there from our hotel but have not been able to figure it out. I am hoping Stu Dudley or another local could tell us what route and type of transportation ( bus, street car ) we would need to take. Also, if possible could you direct us from the deYound to the Legion of Honor. Thanks in advance !

Go to transit.511.org. On the right side, under "Trip Planner", type in Fisherman's Wharf under "A" and "DeYoung Museum" under "B". Hit "Plan your trip". Next window that pops up, click on Sheraton Fisherman's Wharf, and then "Plan trip". Exact directions including how to walk from the hotel to the bus stop and from the bus stop to the museum.

By the way, getting from the DeYoung to the Legion of Honor on Muni apparently takes 4 different buses. You might be better off taking a cab between these two.

The simplest way to get to the DeYoung from the Wharf by public transit is to take the F streetcar to Market and Spear (in front of the Hyatt Embarcadero); take the stairs directly in front down to the underground Muni Metro platform and catch the outbound N Judah metro streetcar to 9th and Irving and walk into Golden Gate Park and the De Young from 9th.

I know of no really simple way to get to the Legion from the DeYoung by public transport, other than to take 2 (not 4) buses via a route that backtracks a bit. That is to take the 5 Fulton bus from Fulton and 8th (Fulton runs on the opposite side of the Park from Irving) all the way to the Ocean and then take the 18 bus (which I believe stops at LaPlaya and Fulton) up to the Legion. If you wanted to see the ocean and explore the western end of Golden Gate Park, it might be worthwhile. But getting back to the Wharf from the Legion would involve at least 3 buses--18, to the 1 California to the 47 Van Ness, I think-- I would be sure to have a copy of the Muni map on hand!!!

SAB , good idea. I just looked this exact route up yesterday as we are thinking of doing the same thing as OP when in SF in 2 weeks.

I am not sure about the King Tut exhibit, getting less than stellar reports online, but haven't been able to get a lot of feedback.

On a related topic. Really make sure the King Tut exhibit is something you want to see.

I saw it in Ft Lauderdale when it was here and I'm glad my tickets were comps.

Deb--This Tut exhibition lacks the large WOW of the 1970's exhibition for me--no iconic funerary mask and many of the artifacts are not from Tut's tomb. Also it is very commercial--I don't know how else to describe it. If you didn't see the 70's exhibition and you know that you are not going to see the "mask" and it is not too crowded I think it might be worth a trip, especially if you are Eygpt fan. Of course I did not pay to see it, and did not make a special trip to see it. If I had to pay, stand in line, only see pieces over the heads of a crowd AND expected to see the funerary mask, I would not have gone. Does that help?

I, on the other hand, took Muni for 25 years. Last year I finally gave up taking it to work when I got a free parking space--driving 3 miles is not very eco-friendly I know--but I figured I put in lots of time on public transit. And I got very tired of the fact that most of the time my admin. could make it home to the East Bay faster than I could get home to Cole Valley in the City on Muni.

Muni is great for visitors--it really covers the City; not so great for those of us who live here and have to be somewhere on time.

I did see it in the 70's though DH did not. I could do without it, he thinks it's the only time he'll see this sort of thing as a trip to Egypt isn't happening.

Tickets will run almost $60 for the two of us, I can think of a better use of time and money.

Debit, I saw the exhibit in the 70s, and at the Egyptian Museum in Cairo last year. Honestly, while it was very interesting, and the whole thing would be worth it if the mask were traveling -- absent the mask, I'd rather eat another meal out for that $60 (not to mention the time)!

I am really getting that feeling, sf. I am sorry I mentioned it to DH, who is a history buff and thinks it would be a good outing.
