After 3 years of a horrible Southern California commute that got longer and longer each year, I was done with the commuting lifestyle. One weekend I took a look at the various corporate businesses in the local business parks and applied for a job at one of the headquarters for a major company. I got the job and now my commute is 5 minutes each way. I feel like I have my life back.

My commute for the past 5 years consists of a 10 minute walk to the 'el'(which in my neighborhood is a subway), a 5-10 minute wait for the subway (sometimes longer given the semi-regular system melt-downs), and an 8-10 minute ride on the subway usually standing smashed up against my fellow passengers who are all squeezed onto an impossibly crowded train, and a 5 minute walk to work after I get off. I'm not sure if it is healthy or not, but it certainly keeps me on my toes. I give myself 35-40 minutes to get to work each day and usually I make it within 10 minutes of when I supposed to be there either way.

Pretty easy since we retired last year.

I've always said that living near work is a greater luxury than any luxury car that could ever get me there.

Mine is 25 minutes if I ride my bike or take the bus, 12 when I drive, 40 if I walk.

My job is about (6 or 7 miles) 10 to 15 minutes away from home via city streets. I love being so close to home.

I live in Northwest DC and my commute to my office is six tenths of a mile. I live in a co-op apartment which I own and we have Zipcar nearby so I am considering giving up my car and the insurance, maintenance, gasoline costs that go with it not to mention the rental of the garage space! I walk use the bus and drive only if I am going to be somewhere else after work that requires driving. My jetta has a total of 5600 miles since I bought it new in Jan 05.

People think that living in the suburbs is cheaper but I have done that and I must say that all my money went into my gas tank not to mention the strain on my nerves and wear and tear on my car. Living in the "center of the donut" definitely has it's advantages in Washington, DC.

I leave home at 8.20am, walk to work arrive at 8.30am, walk home for lunch at 12, back to work at 1, walk home again at 5pm. Sure beats my previous job driving into Nelson but even then it was only like a 20-25 minute drive.

My commute is easy. Eight miles, which is ten minutes.

My office is 75 miles from home. I go in 3 days a week and work at home the other two days; the commute generally takes 2 hours 15 minutes each way, if I leave the house by 5:30 am and we don't have bad weather - an unusual combo. Last month we had a surprise snow storm and it took 7 hours 45 minutes to get home. Not healthy, but thankfully I don't have to do it everyday.

I have no commute - work from home.

Life is nice :)

I am devastated, to tears.

I just found out about 30 minutes ago that they are closing the bridge over the DesPlaines River that I take to work every day from March to August of 2008 to repair it.

Which means my commute just doubled to over an hour and I will have to come through Joliet or go into Lemont in a circle to get to work.

It is the worst news I could have heard and I need to be here for at least the next 22 months.

And I can not move, either. Nor can I get any further from the city where my Dad is who needs so much care/direction at almost 90.

This is just the pits.
