Houston to Flagstaff -- best route and midpoint?

Am driving from Houston to Flagstaff in early Sept. and would like suggestions on best route and best mid-point (more or less, doesn't need to be exact) for an overnight, from the point of view of seeing something interesting or beautiful.

Thanks.

soccr - probably most direct route is I45 to Dallas, US 287 to Amarillo, then I40 to Flagstaff. You could also go I10 to Phoenix then I17 up to Flagstaff, but that route's somewhat less direct [although it may have an edge in terms of scenery if you like the desert].

Rough mid-point on northern route is Amarillo (700 mi from Houston; 610 mi to Flagstaff) - not much to get excited about and there's not a lot of scenic choices within 100 mi or so either way (at least not that we've discovered)

On the southern route, rough mid point is Van Horn (about 684 mi from Houston; 628 mi to Flagstaff). The mountains around Van Horn are nice but not spectacular - although road from there up to the Guadalupe Mts. is rather scenic.

Not sure I've helped much, but obviously the southern route is still going to be very hot in early Sept if that makes any difference to you. My choice? Probably southern route.
