Houston or Texas Guidebook

Can anyone suggest a good guidebook for Houston, or do you need to get a more general Texas guidebook?

I looked at Amazon.com and could not find anything specifically on Houston. It looks like both Moon guides and Frommers have Texas guide books which would cover Houston. I have seen some books at our local bookstore called "Daytrips from...", but that of course would be for cities and towns outside the Houston area.

From what I recall, there is quite a bit of Houston info in the free Texas guidebook from http://traveltex.com/

Thanks, I had tried Amazon. I'll try the free guide.

Susan7....I'm from Houston, is there something specific you are looking for? I'm sure there are guidebooks, but since I live here, it's not something I've looked for,

My favorite guide to Houston is aptly entitled Guide to Understanding and Enjoying Houston by Jerry Herring. Unfortunately, it hasn't been updated and is out of print--too bad, because it's an excellent book. Some of the information, such as restaurant recs may be out of date, but long standing sites, parks and museums haven't changed much. If you can find a used copy somewhere I highly recommend it. It would provide a great orientation to the city.

Not a book, but this website is a good generalguide:

This one for art and performances:

This one for restaurants:

Thanks again. Jewela I was hoping for a guidebook with maps and public transport routes, plus good restaurants near particular locations. This is my second visit to Houston (both times to visit the museum which has fantastic Latin American art shows) but last time without a guidebook I had trouble putting all the districts together and working out how to get around.
