Houston - ArtCar Museum

Has anyone been to the ArtCar Museum in Houston? We are heading to Houston next weekend and ran across this museum in a Texas travel flyer.

Thanks.

I go to the Art Car Parade every year, but haven't been to the museum. Here are some sites to give you more info: http://www.hottowncoolcity.org/view/site/detail/2/
and www.artcarmuseum.com (click on exhibitions/art cars). If it's not out of the way for you, I'd say take a look. Also, in that same general area are the David Adikes Big Presdients' Heads, and I always take visitors there, especially kids, U.S. history buffs, and anyone who likes weird stuff.

We haven't been to the museum, but we've been to the parades; some of them are quite elaborate and worth seeing.

I went to the Art Car Museum a few years ago. Very funky, lots of fun, but don't expect to see great art. Expect to see cars with a lot of decorations glued to them.

I would probably travel 10 miles to see it, but not 100.

I agree with gb - just something fun with a funky vibe; if your time is limited, I'd go with NASA, Kemah, and Moody Gardens in Galveston instead.

I absolutely LOVE the Art Car parades but regret taking a visiting relative to the museum. When we went, there were very few cars on display but lots of political art.

I'll never forget one of the displays. It was a pictoral account leading up to the execution of someone on death row. It showed how the family and inmate were getting prepared for the death & funeral.

If art is supposed to make you engage in conversation, it accomplished that.

I would suggest that you contact the museum to ask if the items on display are suitable for those viewing.

Now, on the other hand, I give a huge thumbs up for the parade.

This is what you should go see instead of the Art Car Museum:
www.beercanhouse.org 222 Malone--between Washington and Memorial inside Loop 610.

mhag, that's funny you should mention that; I just asked a friend at work about it, and she said the same thing - it's more of an art gallery with political art that leans to the far left. I had no idea; I really thought it was just the cars. I'd probably give it a pass unless that's your thing.

I just checked the date for the parade - May 10th. I'll have to ink (not pencil) it into the calendar.

Coincidentally, the Houston Chronicle just ran an article about offbeat and quirky things to do in Houston. It lists:

The Orange Show Monument, The ArtCar Museum, The Flower Man, the Presidential Park and Gardens, Mount Rush Hour, the Quan Am sculpture, and the Forbidden Gardens.

I've never heard of most of these, but the Forbidden Gardens is neat. It's a 40-acre, open-air museum that replicates scenes from China's history, including Beijing's Forbidden City. The website is www.forbidden-gardens.com.
