i've been to houston more recently, so i'll take that part of the question. also, i like houston better! it has a great museum scene, theater, restaurants. If you like museums, check out the Menil Collection _ wonderful collection of surrealism and other stuff. The Museum of Fine Arts Houston just opened a giant new building. also there's a lot of folk arty stuff _ the Orange Show is a weird but fun ... um... installation, and the Art Car Museum has those fantastic decorated cars you see in art car parades. Um, for eating//going out, there is a lot going on in downtown and also in the Montrose area. If you get a chance to see a production at the Alley Theatre or anything by the Houston Grand Opera, do so.

Houston: definitely, NASA (about 20 minutes south on I-45) & Alley Theater. If you like baseball, they have a new ballpark. Galveston is about 40 minutes down I-45, with beaches (not the best), the Strand, etc., boardwalk at Kemah (near NASA)--eating Pier 8 in Kemah/Seabrook for seafood ($9.99 all you can eat & good), Guido's or Clary's in Galveston.

San Antonio: Riverwalk & boat ride, Sunday noon mariachi mass at Mission San Jose, Alamo, jazz at the Landing on the Riverwalk, Six Flags & Sea World if you like amusement parks--eating, Paesano's for Italian on Riverwalk, Mi Tierra & Margarita for Mexican in Mercado (Market).

Linda's advice is excellent but needs some touching up. Her travel times must be via chopper, not car, and it's Gaido, pronounced Geyedo. It has the best seafood on the Gulf Coast, bar none. Ask what Julio reccommends, he's the manager, a good one and he's not my relative.

Houston isn't my kind of town I guess (it's pretty flat and there is a lot of concrete) but if I was going on business or out of necessity I'd try to stick with the Rice University area, the Museum district and for something a little funky (lunch or dinner) maybe the Montrose area.

San Antonio offers the Riverwalk. If you like history and nature the missions can also be interesting but to see more than 2 you have to do some driving. I've heard the Hill Country Hyatt is a really cool place to stay though expensive (neat waterslide surrounding the grounds).

Have a good trip!

Thanks, Charles. I'll blame it on my typing! Also, it is La Margarita. If you have time, a day trip from San Antonio to Johnson City-LBJ Texas White House-Fredericksburg (German influence)-Willow City Loop (Hill Country scenery)-Kerrville (James Avery Jewelry)-San Antonio.

San Antonio is one of my favorite cities! There are so many fun things to do, and there are so many good restaurants to try!

The Mission Trail is good if you like history and being outside. You will need a car. Take water with you, wear comfortable shoes and a hat, and bring sunscreen. Start at the San Jose Visitors' Center, and work your way around. On the first Saturday, the NPS also does tours of the mission ranch from the Visitors' Center in the morning.

Of course, the Riverwalk and downtown areas are great. It is nice to justs troll up and down on in the evening and stop for the occasional drink. El Mercado is fun, and the Mi Tierra restaurant is legendary.

If you like to do some day trips, there are lots of cute towns out in the Hill Country: Fredricksburg, Gruene, Boerne, New Braunfels. Each one has a downtown area with antique shops and restaurants. My personal favorite is Fredricksburg!

There are lots of State Parks around the Hill Country, too. Enchanted Rock State Natural Area is a great place for hiking and a picnic. LBJ's ranch is outside of Fredricksburg and is especially beautiful in the spring time.

Tubing down the Gaudelupe or Comal Rivers is very popular, and Schlitterbahn water park in New Braunfels is a great way to cool off.

Have a great trip to San Antonio!
