Linda,
I stayed 2 nights at the W. Beachcomber in June, and was completely satisfied. We had a standard view room, which overlooked other hotels only, but the room was clean and in good repair, with a nice lanai. The location (for a non-beachfront) is great - about 2 blocks to the beach. Shopping and restaurants are close by.
As a general comment, we were pleased with all hotels and activities on this trip, so if anyone has any questions on the following, please post or contact me: Royal Kona (Hawaii), Maui Kaanapali Villas, Old Lahaina Luau, Atlantis submarine (Oahu), Hananuma Bay snorkeling, Snorkel Bob's, Frogman Snorkel trip (Maui), self-guided Maui downhill biking, America II performance sail.
We stayed at the Beachcomber. It is a great deal. Book online for 89 bucks a night. The Hotel is very nice. Clean large rooms, nice staff and adequate parking. It is right in the middle of Waikiki and 2 blocks from the beach and Duke's. Don't overpay for an oceanfront hotel. You won't spend enough time there to make it worth the $$$$

Sly,
Both of these have good web sites that can be found off a yahoo search.

Snorkel Bob's: I think we paid around $90 for weekly rental of two premium sets, one of which with prescription mask. What I liked was the web reservations, so they had everything ready when we got to Oahu, including the prescription mask. Also, they have 24-hour return on any island you depart from.

Old Lahaina: It's on the oceanfront in Lahaina, costs about $70 per person. Food, drinks, service and entertainment were all great, and I was completely satisfied. My only direct comparison is watching the one at the Royal Kona (Hawaii) from our lanai, which was not nearly as nice. I've looked at a lot of guides and every one seems to rate Old Lahaina #1.
