nanabee, nephew is now encouraging us to rent a friend's house for a very good price ($200 for a week). However, the house is 13 miles south of nephew's home. The friend's home is east of I-5 and south of Hwy 52.
I am now considering renting a car. I use Kayak to search, and found the best prices via Fox rentals. I have never heard of Fox. Is it reputable? Nephew will be off work the entire time I am there (five days), and he wants to take us to see the various sites. However, I hate the thought of being without a car to just run to the store if I want to. What are your thoughts on renting a car? |

Oops, I posted twice. Sorry about that.

We have had no problems renting from Fox and my wife and sister even took a car back(exchanged for a different one) we drove to LA with - to one of their offices in LA.
If you can get a home for $200 for a week - in a decent location (Clairemont Square area is fine and it has some good places to snack, movie theaters, grocery stores, etc) - that is a bargain and then as you are planning - just drive to wherever you need to go. |
I rented from them in Phoenix and it was fine. Others, not so much. Here is a thread on the various experiences others have had. Some replies don't seem legit, but it may help you.

Fox is one of those companies folks either love or hate. Cheap rates but not always the best reputation.
I've used them a couple of times but the last was easily 7 years ago so I have no idea if they are OK now. |
Have rented cars from Fox in San Diego - five or six times - and no problemo.
Also like Enterprise and they sometimes are as competitive pricewise. |
Thanks to all. Here is the latest, as I know it.
Big brother prefers that we stay at the friend's house. That is fine with me, and since I basically am tagging along on the trip, I wouldn't object anyway, unless I knew the house was a wreck and in a bad location. I trust nephew, and this house is owned by his best pal in San Diego. (Nephew travels alot for work and has developed great friendships all over the U.S.) I probably should clarify, in case anyone is interested. Nephew is orginally from Alabama. He moved to San Diego a year or so ago. His job as an insurance adjuster means he is "deployed" to other locations throughout the U.S., sometimes for as much as three months. He just completed a deployment in Alabama. So, his parents, who live in Alabama, are driving with him to San Diego. They will arrive a day or two before me, and his parents will stay a few days after I leave. They will then fly back to Alabama, leaving nephew and his vehicle in San Diego. Unless nephew gets called up for a deployment, he will be free to ferry us all over San Diego, and he is looking forward to that. His parents have met him at other locations once he has completed his deployment, and they say he is a great tour guide. I have reserved a car through Dollar at a special weekend rate. I may cancel it, as brother feels that nephew will be prompt in picking us up and taking us around, based on previous visits. However, having the car will be necessary if he is deployed. When he gets "the call" he usually must report to the new location within 48 hours. |
Sounds like fun!
