Hotels/Motels San Francisco
 

My family and I are travelling from Ireland July 2001.Can anyone advise on suitable Hotels/Motels in safe areas of San Francisco at reasonable rates. <BR>Thanks in anticipation <BR>Fred.

Helps if you tell us what "reasonable" means to you.

I was thinking in the region of $125-$175 per night.

This is not fancy and does not have a pool but on my trip I had a kitchenette at Pacific Heights Inn for an entire week at less than $150 a day. Parking and breakfast rolls, coffee are included. It is in a very nice section and we saw everything within the San Francisco city limits using public transportation from this nicely central location. I booked on one of the webpages- possibly hoteldiscounts.com but you could call direct too and try to get a weekly rate.

We stayed at a Super 8 Motel -= sorry can't tell you the exact location but it was near the main freeway that leads to downtown SF. It had been recently remodelled and we paid $80 for 2 queen beds which was a bargain.

Two quick thoughts. If you are serious about your budget the 14% hotel tax mentioned earlier does damage very quickly. And if you are seriously considering going to Alcatraz , highly recommended , I'd book tickets in advace of your trip. You'll be in the height of the tourist season and these trips may well be booked out. <BR> The Andrews is a real "boutique" experience but unfortunately they had a magor rate hike in Jan. perhaps because of the enonomy they may have rolled their rates back. Was definitely a good deal. Very nice place. I know the Sheehan from using their pool for lap swimming and as was mentioned I think this used to be a YWCA residence. Older , not as slick or fancy. But the rooms were adaquate and fairly large. Good location. <BR> <BR>

My family and I stayed at the Lombard Motor Inn last July. The room was a decent size and came with free parking. We got a room at the back instead of the balcony rooms out front so that we could avoid the street noise. There were two different bus routes stopping a block away so we took buses everywhere! There is also a Safeway grocery store within a very short drive so if you want to save on breakfast or lunch you can stock up. (I don't remember if it is too long to walk.) Enjoy!

Ditto for the Andrews Hotel.. they are a boutique hotel,old fashioned type rooms, but their huge buffet breakfast outside the rooms in the a.m. certainly makes up for any small price hike...plus it's difficult to get it.. go to www.andrewshotel.com We have been there twice and it's very convenient..and if you rent a car they are a parking garage that is closeby and the price is right for parking and taking in and taking out. Also taxi cabs are very reasonable

fred, <BR>someone just posted on another discussion a recommendation for the radission fisherman's warf. i think with kids, any of the chain hotels in the fisherman's warf area would be fine. our recommendations would really be dependent upon budget, number and age of kids and interests. i bit more information would be helpful. <BR>sharon

Fred, <BR>Just returned from SanFrancisco. Our family stayed at the Hyatt at Fisherman's Wharf. There are (I think) 3 different Hyatts. We were at the Wharf. We had a large room on the top floor as a Hyatt Passport member - free program/sign up. We were within walking distance of F. Wharf, N. Beach - Italian area, and the cable car was right outside our hotel which took us everywhere. We walked to G. Square, the Marina, Exploratorium (a long walk). etc. Very safe and clean. We requested a small refrigerator and picked up some provisions. Only downside is what the new rates are now. We made reservations months ago and it was great. Prices may have changed. Other downside is that you pay 20+ per night for parking - only valet. You never need the car in the city. Otherwise, Hyatt provided wonderful service. Good luck.
