Hotels in Vegas

What is the best moderatlely priced hotel in Vegas?

melba Aug 8th, 2001 07:04 PM

Westward Ho is pretty nice and right on the strip.

Frank Aug 9th, 2001 05:36 AM

They're all moderately priced if you go off-season, Sunday thru Thursday. Bellagio was going for as low as $89 a night this summer.

Paris is a very nice property, good rates and even a Triple A discount.

mj Aug 11th, 2001 01:38 PM

I stayed at the Sahara last week. Spacious rooms, clean, $32 their rate Sun-Thur up to $59 on weekends. Friendly staff. I did notice the Golden Nuggett downtown looked nice...lot of gold and white. Good atmosphere in the Golden Gate, also downtown. A piano player wearing a derby hat, dressed like the 1890s, people having a good time. The Golden Gate is the oldest hotel in Las Vegas ,so, it might not be for everyone, but I liked it.

I've paid $49 for weekdays at the Monte Carlo and I absolutely love the place.

jan Aug 11th, 2001 02:30 PM

The prices may vary depending on the time of year.
I'd try Luxor (very nice hotel) moderately priced, New York-New York, Excalibur, MGM runs specials, The Rio (off the strip) but very nice hotel, and Harrahs. Word of advice, don't go to Westword Ho, I've heard it's a DUMP!!!
Good luck!!

OK, veterans, help out us rookies. I was looking at a Vegas vacation for October, but Bellagio rooms were upwards of $200. That's like NY prices! Is summer the 'off-season'? Which months? How does one get those great low rates--Bellagio for $89? Is there a particularly good website for booking? Thanks for your help!

thereuare Aug 11th, 2001 08:05 PM

All year round, mid-week rates (Sun-Thur) can cost less than half of weekend (Fri+Sat) nites. Summer is the slowest time in Vegas, as well as the weeks just before Christmas (less discretionary income for most). Bellagio is also one of the finest hotels in Vegas (if not in the country, if not the world), so the prices will often be $200+. The $89 rate talked about on this board was sent out to holders of their "slot card." Most people try to sign up for the slot cards at most of the hotels upon their first trip to Vegas, as this is often used as a mailing list for hotel promos.

Personally, i wouldn't spend the money for such an expensive hotel in Vegas, it's just not my style (but i have no problem with other people spending the money). Is it nice, SURE!!!!, but not worth the extra money in my eyes. I'm also one of those people that spends very little time in my room in Vegas, and has little interaction with the hotel staff during my stay, in any city. There are some other very nice hotels, with reasonable rates, that represent a better value for your dollar.

With that said, hotel rates are a commodity in Vegas... rates change almost as fast as the stock prices of the corporations that now own them. There are plenty of good "deals" to be found, but they require persistence in calling and getting rates. Vegas hotel properties are unique in that they are unlike any other area of the country. Usually the earlier you book the better your rate, but that's not always true in Vegas. The companies have spend a lot of money on sophisticated programs that constanty adjust the prices based upon the current supply and demand (as well as conventions in town, which is a whole other story).

One of the best place to find deals is in the LA Times, as they get a lot of weekenders coming in from LA, much of the advertising dollar goes to that market. Here's a website that reprints the current LA Times ads: http://govegas.about.com/bllatimes.h...imes+Las+Vegas

A good way to get a "ballpark" idea of hotel rates (and i've used them once in the past) is at www.lvrs.com, as you put in your dates and they show you the rates for ALL the available hotels at once. If this will be your first visit to Vegas, i WOULD HIGHLY recommend staying on the stip, and ideally centrally located (anywhere between MGM/NYNY area and Treasure ISland)

Rookie:
The best place to find those $89 rates is to go directly to the MGM/Mirage website. Check on the hotel you want. All mirage properties are listed. And then check on "special promotions." These will be the lowest rates you will find anywhere and are the same as the rates they mail to their mailing list(I'm on it). The special rates usually are for 1 or 3 nights only. For other nights you will pay higher rates. Or you can switch hotels to take advantage of the specials.
A tip: When you book on the website they will quote an average price per night. When you change your stay dates you will often see the price change dramatically.
Thereuare explains the system well. Friday and Saturday prices can be 2 to 3 times weekday rates. This also applies when there are special events in town. So the answer is don't go there on Friday or Saturday or special events. If you can be a little flexable, you can stay at some very fine hotels for bargain prices. In most cities in the country or world $200/night would be considered cheap for these hotels. I know of nowhere else you can do this. So why not treat yourself to the best if you get the chance.

I would whole-heartedly agree with thereuare about the hotel situation in Vegas. All of the big hotels on the strip between treasure island and mandalay bay are nice, it's all about finding the right deal at the right time! I have stayed at Luxor, Excalibur (yuck), New york, New york, Monte Carlo, Treasure Island, Ceasars Palace (awesome if you can find a deal...which is rare), Imperial Palace (double yuck), MGM, and a few others. (Can you tell I love Vegas?? It's a great weekend getaway from LA) The reason that it is so dirt cheap in the summer during the week is because it is hotter than you-know-what there (i was there last week and it was 115 degrees...although it's "Dry" heat...let's just say it's better than visiting my relatives in Illinois during the same time of year :) )

Anyway...i usually start from the www.lvrs page as well, becuase it gives you an idea of how much you will pay. I've often booked there as well, because they will often have prices that are lower than the hotels will quote you themselves.

One word of warning: Weekend are ALWAYS more expensive at anytime of year, so don't be too shocked...Vegas used to be a really cheap place, but it is gaining in popularity, so it's not that way anymore.

One more word of advice: You should stay on the strip....even if you get a GREAT deal somewhere else, everything "looks" very close, but in reality, when you start walking, even the next casino is pretty far away...anyone with me here?

Gretchen Aug 12th, 2001 03:30 PM

I too am looking for a reasonable Vegas hotel,
I have a close friend who lives nearby and she said whatever I do DO NOT stay at Westward Ho...

(she said this to me before I even read this post , so tehereccommendation on this board shocked me a bit)

rookie Aug 12th, 2001 07:37 PM

Gerry, Lara, and Thereaure--thanks for the great advice! I checked out Bellagio on the MGM site and found a $139 rate in October. I know LV has gotten more expensive, but as I'm going mainly for shows, I wanted to hunt for a great rate so I could splurge on tickets.
Any other suggestions for a really great room? I don't care about the casinos much. The Bellagio came highly recommended, but I'd like to compare a bit. Venetian? Others?

Thanks again.

In my opinion, this is THE website to check out opinions about Vegas hotels:

http://www.a2zlasvegas.com/hotels/rate-st.html

Just make sure to click on the left where it says "View Rating and Comment" rather than the hotel name itself (as the latter will take you to the hotel's website).

Many people also like this websites humorous style of writing:

http://www.cheapovegas.com/
