There are indeed 2 Sheraton hotels in midtown diagonally across the street from each other. I always though that was strange. It's also pushing it quite a bit to call the location (51st-52nd and 7th) "Times Square" as it's about 9-10 blocks away! I guess they're trying to give people a rough idea where it is, but I'm sure some people are misled by the location

dawnnoelm Aug 15th, 2007 02:14 PM

nyer that is really strange - and I did not know it was so far from time square. Dh did not mention that - he seemed okay with the location but said the rooms at the Marriott where larger and more up-to-date.

Have you tried bidding on priceline.com. Check out biddingfortravel.com first.

Good luck.

Re the Sheraton at 51/52 and 7th being in Times Square or not, remember that you are not talking 42nd street (which IS 9 blocks south as mentioned) but Times Square - a square covers some ground! Times Square goes from 42nd to 47th so a hotel on 51st IS essentially at Times Square.

I like the Sheraton...received an email with 179.00 a night special...sign up with whatever hotel chain before booking...don't rememeber the dates the 179 was for...two right across the street from each other...nice gym with a steam shower...helps after a long day of walking!

'Just joining the chorus of those who've had good luck with the Doubletree, Renassaince, and Marriott Marquis in the Times Square area, and nearby Millenium. It's really up to you about how much hustle-bustle you want, but is particularly good if you want to be near the theater -- so much nicer than trying to get a cab in that area when the theaters let out.

But there are other hotels in a not-bad walk. The issue with NY these days (aside for high occupancy levels, which encourages those prices,) is that many older hotels are now undergoing conversions to condos; fall is prime time in NYC for the arts, as well as other doings (e.g. Fashion Week, when the designers show in Bryant Park,) etc. It's a lively time to be there, but you are in the thick of high season.

I agree that you might try Priceline for 4* properties if you want a pretty nice place. While there are many good 3*, there is more variability -- are you feeling lucky?

GoTravel Aug 16th, 2007 06:37 AM

I would definitely consider the Sheraton to be in Times Square.

nyer Aug 16th, 2007 06:55 AM

well.. by defintion (at least to long time New Yorkers)Manhattan's "squares" (Times Square, Herald Square, Madison Square etc) are points at the intersection of Broadway and another avenue. SO "Times Square" is really at the intersection of Broadway and 7th avenue, named because of the closeness to the New York Times (now, and former) offices.
Agreed that it is a convenient midtown location close enought to theaters and other tourist sites but "Sheraton Times Square"??-- I think that's pushing it ;)

NeoPatrick Aug 16th, 2007 08:06 AM

nyer, what you said is true, but don't 7th and Broadway actually come together (at least in terms of no buildings separating them) at 47th?

I've never thought that when people say they want to be at Times Square that they literally mean they have to be on the actual "square". I assume (maybe wrongly?) that they mean within a few minutes walk of that big open area or even just "the area where all the theatres are". I call even call hotels like the Westin or the TS Hilton, Times Square hotels even though they are almost as far from the actual "intersection of Times Square" as the Sheratons are.

nyer Aug 16th, 2007 08:33 AM

NeoPatrick, you're probably right that most people don't want--or expect--to be right at 42nd and Bdwy/7th when they say Times Square, but hotels, like all real estate concerns, seem to be playing around with the definitions of neighborhoods and can really mislead people! As I said, I dont think it's a bad location, but 51st and 7th seems a bit removed from some of the theaters in Shubert Alley or thereabouts
At 47th street the avenues are certainly close, but don't actually meet. If you zoom in and look at google or yahoo map you'll see the distinction.

NeoPatrick Aug 16th, 2007 08:44 AM

I don't think I need to look at Google. Isn't 47th the north side of the old TKTS booth, and where the Renaissance is on the north side? At that point (47th) although there is a little space between 7th and Broadway, there are no buildings between them to the south, giving a full open area. If you're standing on 47th between 7th and Broadway -- you are totally open to the big area most people call Times Square (construction barriers not withstanding). So walking from that point to the Sheraton (4 blocks) takes about 4 or 5 minutes if you don't hit all "walk" lights. If you do hit them all as walk, it will take even less.

dawnnoelm Aug 16th, 2007 08:47 AM

The only thing I know is that dh was fine with the location of the Sheraton - never brought up that it was too far from Time square et.

and using reward points always makes a stay a little better :-)

starrsville Aug 16th, 2007 08:52 AM

Most hotel chains use about a 10 block N/S area to call their hotel "Times Square". I used to stay at West 50th and Broadway and considered that convenient to the theatres (although locals still called it Hell's Kitchen)

GoTravel Aug 16th, 2007 09:02 AM

There are eight theaters, including The Gershwin on the same block at 51st and Seventh and over 50 theaters within six blocks.

It isn't removed at all.

To NeoPatrick:

We think we got a good deal but will not go to Gordan Ramsey for dinner, though maybe we will eat in The Bar for breakfast. Since you seem to know alot the area, where should we go for a nice casual lunch in the neighborhood? Maybe you could view my threads about lunch near London NYC and dinner in the Meatpacking District. Thanks.

NeoPatrick Aug 16th, 2007 11:30 AM

DMG, I've responded on both those threads.

ggreen Aug 16th, 2007 03:21 PM

I agree with NeoP - Broadway and 7th Ave intersect at West 47th Street, not at 42nd Street where there is more of a separation - and buildings - in between.

Starrsville, I've always understood Hell's Kitchen to start at 8th Ave as its eastern edge and extend west from there, so West 50th at Broadway would not be considered part of the neighborhood, especially by locals.
This Wikipedia entry says the same:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hell's_Kitchen,_Manhattan

Of course, what the realtors say about any of this is an entirely different matter! :D

ggreen Aug 16th, 2007 03:31 PM

DMG, I listed a number of casual options in Hell's Kitchen in my most recent post on this thread:
"NYC Hotel Advice"; my post on restaurants was on 8/14/07, 3:02pm
http://www.fodors.com/forums/threads...p;tid=35048195

Here are suggestions for someone visiting MoMA, which is one block from the London Hotel:
"Quick Lunch Near MoMA"
http://www.fodors.com/forums/threads...p;tid=35050758

And for someone staying at the Hilton, again one block from your hotel:

Hope this helps! :)

I've stayed at both the Sheratons and other hotels closer to Times Square. Sheraton is, in my mind, sort of between Times Square and the edge of Central Park. Hotels like the Muse are "in" Times Square, like one block directly off the square. Either location is great for theater-goers. And being a few blocks more away from the insanity of being right on the Square, like the Sheratons, has advantages.

starrsville Aug 16th, 2007 04:01 PM

ggreen -
World Wide Plaza (the location of the old Madison Square Garden). I googled and the address was given as 350 W 50th, between 8th and 9th. I remembered her entrance with doormen was between B'way and 8th (Broadway has already crossed 7th by then), but either I have a faulty memory or there's another entrance. I don't remember it as the other side of 8th. Who knows? Friends had apartments (with rooftop terrace gardens) on the shorter structure and that entrance was different from hers. In any case, I remember wrong or I'm off by a 1/2 block to match Wiki's description. I'm just a hick from the boonies :-D. I did like knowing that I was soaking in a marble tub on the 30-something floor in the locale for West Side Story. Hell's Kitchen? Hell's bells? They had razed the corner at either 8th or Broadway and I thought they built a hotel there - and I betcha they are calling it Times Square! :-) I need to come back up there and walk the old haunts - it's been too long!
