Hotels in NYC

My husband and I are coming to New York Dec. 18-21. I have reservations at the Wellington Hotel for $161.10 per night. Travelzoo has Millenium Broadway at $199 a night. Is it worth changing? I've stayed at the Wellington before and it was fine. I've read Tripadvisor for both hotels and they both have some mixed reviews. I'm thinking for the almost $40 price difference I should stay with the Wellington. Any thoughts? This is not our first trip to New York. It's kind of a special occasion but we have to think budget, too. We're seeing two shows while we're there. I'm open to suggestions. Thanks in advance!

We stayed at the Residence Inn Times Square, which gets very good reviews on TripAdvisor, but I'm not sure you could get a similar rate there. No harm trying, though. It is very convenient to the theatre district, but far enough away from Times Square that you aren't in the chaos. A room on an upper floor would be romantic, and it is diagonal from a nice little park. I would say that your rate at the Wellington is very good if you already know what to expect and are fine with it.

If you were satisfied with the Wellington before - why change? (Although I think the Millenium is a little more pleasant - it's still nowhere near luxury.)

Sheraton Towers is a nice place and it's near the park. The rooms are all redone in chocolate and very nice.

I find the Wellington more than a bit depressing with very outdated rooms, long dark hallways, slow elevators and a general feeling of cheapness. But it's a huge place (700 rooms) so maybe it depends on the room you get. Spend some time looking at "candid travelers photos" on tripadvisor and see what you think.

While the Millenium Broadway isn't luxurious, it's a lot fresher, the special on travelzoo is for an upgraded high floor room which will have a view, so for me, it would be worth it. You may also see some other specials on travelzoo for your dates b/w now and then at a hotel that might appeal to you more.

Frankly, I wouldn't consider switching to a new hotel. Save your money, and you can have a wonderful meal at one of NYC's top restaurants for your $200. Be sure to reserve a restaurant at least 30 days in advance for this busy busy period if you want to get into one of the better places.

I love how you get responses for other hotels when you are asking for two specific ones.

Agree with Doug, stay at the Wellington.

Thank you. It's been about four years since I stayed at the Wellington so if it was terrible, I might want to switch hotels. I did think that saving the $150 and going to a nice dinner would probably be a great idea. I will keep watching and see if anything fantastic should come up.
We're certainly not in New York for the hotel. Maybe someday money won't matter and I can stay anywehre - but until then, I'm just happy we're going to New York.

If it's that long since you were at the Wellington it's likely to be a lot more tired than it was then.

In that case I would do the Millenium - much fresher.
