hotels in newport beach?
My husband and I will be spending about four nights in newport beach in July. Looking for a nice hotel under $200 a night. What's the best hotel in the area for that price? Haved looked at Hyatt Newporter, how is it?? Any one every heard of the Balboa Bay Club??

Would love to stay at Four Seasons but too expensive unless anyone knows of a way to get a discounted rate???

Stayed at Hyatt for business meeting several years ago. It was fine, but big and about the same as any other Hyatt. A pretty small hotel in Newport is Doryman's Inn, but I don't know current room rates. Even if you don't stay there, consider having dinner downstairs at the 21 Ocean Front restaurant.Another smaller hotel is Portofino Beach. Other than those, it's mostly big and expensive in Newport Beach.

Balboa Bay Club has a good location...lots of close by restaurants and is located right on a private beach. Only problem is that it's an older club and is currently undergoing major renovations. I don't think that renovations are going to be completed for quite some time, so I'd call and check on that before booking there.

Michelle,
If you are looking for a nice clean room close to the beach, try the Bay Shores Inn, Best Western. We stayed there 2 years ago and enjoyed having just a short walk to the beach. It is in the beach residential area and walking distance to the Newport Beach Pier. We enjoyed looking for shells and the sunsets from the pier. Good Luck - Phil

I had dinner last night at the restaurant attached to the Portofino Inn. It's called Renato's Ristorante, and, although I've lived in the area for years I had never heard of it! It was very good, with a pretty interior. Best of all, it's not as "corporate" as so many restaurants in this area.

Unfortunately, I have no experience with the hotel, but if you end up there, do try the restaurant!

Four Seasons discount

See if they have any corporate rates from your's or your husband's work and ask for a standard room. For some reason they always try to book you in a superior room. The standard room was huge with a king size bed and big marble bathroom.

I stayed there last year for $190 per night with a corporate discount.
STAY AWAY FROM THE BALBOA INN!!!! No matter where you stay in Newport Beach, don't make it the Balboa Inn. The ownership there is a bunch of crooks. STAY AWAY!!!!
