Hotels in New York and Vicinity

Hello-
My son will be visiting New York April 26-May 1. He's on a pretty tight budget and looking for a hotel that is in a decent and safe area that is within walking distance to subway. Any and all tips or recommendations are greatly appreciated!

How tight? What is his actual budget?

Larchmont Hotel or Hotel 17

One option is Priceline; the zones in NYC are so small that he'll know what area he's picking.
Another is staying in Long Island City, Queens; it's a short subway ride from Manhattan.
A third is staying in a hostel; there are only a few legal ones in NYC, and the names escape me right now.

You really need to give us a specific budget if you want specific recommendations.

If he's a young man he might want to look into the Hosteling International - which is very well-regarded - near Columbia University. I believe a bed and locker in a shared dorm room is about $45 per night.

In terms of hotels, I believe the Jane has some very small rooms with shared bath - and is probably one of the least expensive in the city.

If he looks at Priceline he needs to be sure he can live with any hotels in that * range in that area - I would check tripadvisor to make sure it doesn't have any that are unacceptable (there are some budget places he will NOT want to stay due to lack of cleanliness and vermin).

Long Island City has some very budget friendly hotels near a subway. The Verve, Comfort Inn, Quality Inn and Nesva are all pretty good. In Manhattan, if he's willing to deal with shared bathrooms, the Jane is an option

He should concentrate his search in Queens, but NOT at any so-called airport hotel. There are plenty if other options as well as a handful of cheap hotels in Manhattan that are decent. Some of Thisbe have shared baths, which nay or may not be a problem.

The OP may not even realize there are responses. She registered and hasn't been back (often newbies assume incorrectly that they get e-mail notifications when there is activity on there threads)
