Now is a good time to visit Monterey. Summer can be cold an damp. This time of the year is much more predictble.
There are plenty of hotels on or along Cannery Row which allows you to walk that area. Any of the hotel web sites can give you up to the minute rates and ratings.
I'd suggest something away from the Cannery Row. For a more guaint and local feel, maybe a B&B in Carmel or Pacific Grove. If you wnat something more upscale and spa-like, consider the Hyatt Highland Inn in Carmel.
You need a car anyway. Traffic and parking are not bad at all.

The Holiday Inn Express is nice. Within easy walking distance to cannery row, restaurants ect. Nice wine and cheese reception in the lobby each evening plus an upgrade to the usual HI Exp breakfast. Some upper floor rooms have a view. Ours was on the 3rd floor and we had to twist our necks, but it was there Doesn't really matter tho as you'll be out and about more than in the room.

The Monterey Plaza Hotel & Spa is amazing, a gorgeous property with a Penthouse spa, two restaurants, spacious lobby and it is right on the water. It is walking distance to the aquarium and restaurants, also. Have fun! ***kim***

Portola Plaza is in a better location, right at the end of Fisherman's Wharf. The hotel is pretty and there is a pool across the way there, it is right in the middle of some great little shops and cafes. ***kim***

We enjoy being on Oceanview Blvd. in Pacific Grove, particularly The Martine Inn www.martineinn.com
From there you can walk to the aquarium or to the shops in downtown Pacific Grove or walk along the water.
