Hotels in D/C

heading to d/c Aug 3-5 and looking for an inexpensive hotel, maybe in Georgetown, as downtown is way to expensive

tchoiniere Jul 20th, 2011 01:06 AM

What do you consider inexpensive?

bardo1 Jul 20th, 2011 04:34 AM

Georgetown is not less expensive than downtown.

There are some inexpensive hotels in or close to downtown. Here they are:

As a Plan B, you might consider Alexandria. Easy access to the tourist areas of DC via two Metro lines. Old Town Alexandria has numerous restaurants so it makes a nice base.

I just got a Travelzoo offer that includes the Palomar in Dupont Circle. If you can get it, it would be a fabulous choice in a fabulous location.

>>What do you consider inexpensive?<<

Good question. And even in August, work week is pricier than weekends.

Priceline is might be option?

(sf...when I looked at that link it was for the Palomar in Rosslyn, just across the Key Bridge from Georgetown. Still a great deal and a gorgeous hotel)

Oh, my mistake - I didn't pay that much attention.

chewybo40 Jul 20th, 2011 01:46 PM

In expensive 175 or less. Thanks for all the info

Don't forget to count transportation costs when selecting a hotel. Being near a metro stop can make quite a difference to cost and convenience - and many parts of Georgetown are not as accessible by public transportation as some other parts of DC.

Also look at the Social Living site. The last few weeks they had a Kimpton hotel near the White House at a reasonable rate. I forget how much because the offer was not available for the time I was visiting.

Hotel Rouge near DuPont Circle has summer sales of rooms about $150. We stayed there in 2008 and we liked it. One of our friends stayed there not long ago and also thought it good (price and location). Don't let the leopard underwear in the closet scare you off.

Not that it matters, but we actually stayed there in 2009. I like to be factually correct (usually).

There was also a special on travel zoo - I don't remember the price, but it was for The Jefferson Hotel. I lived in the DC area for many years. It was my grandmother's favorite hotel and is absolutely beautiful. I agree with Ryan about Alexandria being a good Plan B.

Downtown is not to expensive if you are willing to put some effort in: I recently booked downtown Dc Capital Hilton for $149.00 a night.

obxgirl Jul 21st, 2011 08:30 PM

I am a total fan and frequent stayer at the Rouge (and Kimpton properties in general). $150 a night is an excellent mid week rate. I echo maitai's comments except to add that I suspect he was more than pleased with the leopard underwear.

" I echo maitai's comments except to add that I suspect he was more than pleased with the leopard underwear."

Damn, I told them "no pictures!!!!"

I like the Tabard Inn near Dupont Circle and it's in your price range: http://www.tabardinn.com/rooms/tour/private_bath

bardo1 Jul 25th, 2011 05:47 AM

A very strong second for the Tabard Inn. I should have put that on my earlier list - at the top.

obxgirl Jul 25th, 2011 09:09 AM

I've stayed at the Tabard Inn once in the last three years and while I enjoyed it (and would consider staying there again), it's not your standard urban hotel experience. It's got a very old world European feel and decor. Charming and antique-y. A bit quirky, in a pleasant way.

The good:

Location is excellent.
Restaurant is excellent.
My room was spacious and comfortable.
Staff is helpful.
Rates are static and often a bargain for the area.

The not as good (for me):

Not all rooms have private baths. (mine did)
Internet was ish (maybe that was situational, not chronic)
No television or radio (that might be a plus to some but not to me)
