The Magnolia hotel is right on the Metro Rail line if you wanted to ride it to see a bit of Houston while you are here.

I think we will do that Rich. There is also free shuttles within a certain radius of the hotel. Might take advantage of that too.

Southbound MetroRail will take you thru "Downtown" Houston, the museum district, the Zoo, the Medical Center and out to the Astrodome/NRG Stadium. Been a while since I rode it, but it cost a pittance as I recall

Just returned from our trip to Houston and Boca Raton. We stayed at the Lancaster hotel in downtown Houston. It was literally a minute's walk to the bus stop where we were able to catch either the 246 or the 249 bus which took us to the Space Centre.

We were originally going to take the 246, but the 249 came along, with NASA Space Center on the front of the bus, so hopped on that one. Cost $ 2.00 each way. Took about an hour and a half. The bus stop at the Space Center was about two minutes away.

We spent 4 3/4 hours there, and caught the 3pm bus back to the hotel. Did have a slight problem as there was a new bus driver on, his GPS wasn't working properly, and was trying to use a very small map. He got lost. A passenger had to direct him back to the correct route!!

A bit of adventure, and a cheap way to get to the Space Center.

meant to say DH and I both thoroughly enjoyed our visit. Took the tram tour to the historic mission control, had fun exploring the shuttle, and looking at the equipment that had been used on the moon expedition was fascinating.

Our flight from Houston to Boca was just hours before the heavy rain happened, and all the flooding, very lucky to leave before that all happened.

Was the Lancaster under renovation? We drove by it last week and it looked to be.

Did you ride the MetroRail?

nelsonian Apr 28th, 2016 11:25 AM

No, the Space Center was the only thing we did, apart from walk around the hotel area. Our flight got pushed back a day so only there for a day and a half.

Yes the outside of the hotel was being renovated. They start work at 10am and finish at 5pm. Did not affect us at all.

Hi nelsonian, I'm glad you were able to get to NASA so easily and inexpensively. I wish we could have met while you were here but the door is always open for you to make a return visit. And who knows, maybe someday I will get back to NZ. I can't believe it's been 30 years since my visit to your beautiful country.
