Hotels and dining in Tahoe
 

I posted awhile back on driving from SF to Tahoe. Now having decided that is what we will do I need more help. I found a rate staying at Ceasars for $69 a night since we will be there on a Monday and Tuesday night. Have decided to add another night because we are thinking of driving to Reno and also Carson City. How long a drive would that be and also any dining help would be appreciated. How is Ceasars since the rate seem very inexpensive?

Any feeback on my questions. Also I have been told that going to Tahoe the second week of April that it could possibly be snow storm weather is that true? How frequently are there storms at that time of year?

We are also driving from SF to Carson City on the 5th of April. I didn't know there could be snow. I have family there and I will email them and ask and let you know. We booked in the Best Western Carson Station for 45.00 per night. This hotel had a high rating on tripadvisor.com so we thought we would stay there. We are visiting Virginia City and taking a cruise on Lake Tahoe. What are you doing?

Ceasars is a very nice large semi-luxury casino hotel. It is often easy to get midweek deals at Caesars/Harrah/Harveys after Easter and before Memorial Day so I am not surprised at the $69 rate. You will not be disappointed.

Reno/Carson City is an easy drive from South Lake Tahoe - but any particular reason you want to go there? Reno is a gambling destination (yes there are other interesting things there but 95% of visitors only see the downtown casinos). You will have 4 major and a couple of smaller casinos w/i a block of Caesars so you really don't need to go to Reno to do that sort of thing.

Carson city is slightly different - it is the State Capital and the capitol bldg is interesting plus there are some victorian houses and a couple of museums.

Another option would be to go to Virginia City and then stop in Carson City on your way back to S lake Tahoe.

No one can predict what the weather will be this far out - you need to wait until about 7 days before your trip. April can be cool/clear and glorious, or it can be rainy, or you can have a Spring snow storm. This year has had even more snow than normal - but what it is doing in Jan/Feb bears little on what you'll have in April . . . . .

We are actually visiting family in SF. Spending 3 nights in SF then planning on staying 2 nights in Tahoe most likely Caesars. Want to enjoy the ride which I heard was a great scenic drive and then like to visit maybe Virginia City (as suggested) and Carson City. The only reason I wanted to see Reno is just to basically drive thru and say I had been there. The cruise sounds nice maybe we will look into that also since we have 2 nights there. We are from MA and don't got to CA that often. Last time there was for a wedding in 1999. We enjoy dining also so still trying to get suggestions on that end.

Then I'd forget about Reno - the main highways (395 and 80) now bypass around the center of town and driving through is mainly a loooooong procession of stop lights and traffic.

I usually stay at the north end of the lake (Kings Beach or Incline Village) which are 45 minutes ormore from where you are staying, so am not really that up to date on the best places to eat at the south end. But lots of other fodorites have posted about good places down south - if you do a search you'll probably come up w/ several threads w/ just what you are looking for . . . . .

Caesars has several restaurants. Its Broiler room is very good and very expensive. The other restaurants are more reasonably priced. Harrahs and Harvey's both have several restaurants, including ones with great views, but IMHO, the food is just average.

The best restaurant in South Lake Tahoe is Evans, small, intimate, but also very expensive. Other good restaurants in SLT include Scusa's on Ski Run Blvd (Italian food), The Cantina (Mexican food), Nepheles (California cuisine), The Beacon at Camp Richardson, Ernie's (for a great breakfast at a reasonable price), Cafe Fiore (Italian food), Freshie's (a little hole in the wall with good food), and the Fresh Ketch at Tahoe Keys (great seafood).
