Hotel Upgrades?

How do you get a hotel upgrade? Request at the time you make the reservation? Thanks

If the hotel has a "guest awards" program, join it so you can present your guest number (or card) at check and ask very politely about an upgrade. You can also call ahead and inquire. I have done both with varying degrees of success. My brother in law checked into the Marriot in San Juan and requested and ocean view, he was told they sold out; he presented his Marriot Rewards card and asked if they would please credit his stay to his rewards account, and suddenly an ocean view room was available, and at no extra charge. I am sure that all upgrades (if they are available) are at the discretion of the desk clerk, so it always pays to be nice!

When we stayed at the Outrigger Reef On The Beach in sept. we didn't even have to ask for an upgrade and they gave us one for free. I booked through Pleasant Hawaiian Holiday for a pov and got a ov the room and view was real nice.
