Hotel to stay in Queens

Hi all,

I'm flying into LA Gardia airport and have 24hrs in New York until my flight home which leaves from JFK, any recommendations for any hotels to stay with the family and things to do in this area??

What time are your flights; that might make a difference.
When?
Budget for the hotel?
How many people - adults & kids under 18?

My first impulse would be to get from LGA into the city via car service ASAP and stay overnight in the city. Then take the train to JFK next day or use car service. I used Via and thought it was great and reasonably price.

Hi there,
We have already had 5 nights previous to our stay in Orlando, so would like to try somewhere different for our short stay before our return to Scotland. There is 2 adults and 2 kids aged10 and 15 in our party. We arrive at 3pm and leave the following day at 7pm

If you do not want to come into Manhattan, I would recommend staying in one of the hotels in Flushing, which is not far from La Guardia. Downtown Flushing has a large concentration of Chinese residents and many, if not most, businesses cater to them. There are great restaurants, food courts, and opportunities for shopping for clothing, etc.

If you want to go into Manhattan, then I would stay at a hotel in Long Island City, Queens. The closest hotel to the subway is the Country Inn & Suites Long Island City, which is often under $150 per night. It's a short taxi ride from LGA, and then you can take a car service the next day to JFK.

There's a strong argument against going into Manhattan with the kids since in reality you won't arrive at your hotel before 5 or so. Let them have a good dinner and sleep, and then do something the next morning.

If you don't want to come into Manhattan, then I agree that your best bet may be a hotel in Queens, where you can get excellent Chinese or Korean food near Main Street in Flushing and a fairly quick trip to either airport. There are a few good hotels in Flushing, including a Hyatt Place Flushing/La Guardia (but it's expensive). There are cheaper options nearby.

Just make sure you are close to the 7 Train wherever you stay. For something to do, you could take the 7 Train to Willets Point the next morning to visit the Queens Museum, which has a miniature version of NYC. Flushing Meadows Park itself is where the US Open Tennis Tournament is held. However, the museum is closed on Mondays.

I mentioned staying in Flushing, thinking that you wanted to spend your time in the area of the hotel, not travel into Manhattan. If I had 14 hours, including a night's sleep, I would probably stay there (Flushing) where I could wander around looking at the various sights of a thriving Chinatown, and eat a good meal (or two). This would work well only for someone who wants to experience the sights, smells, and sounds of a large Chinatown. If you have one in your home city, or have little interest, than Flushing would not be a great choice as far as nearby activities.

Some visitors like to explore our options for clothing and sporting goods; you can do this in Flushing, too, as there are branches of:

Target
H&M
Macy's
Old Navy
Nike (outlet)
Uniqlo
Modell's (spoting goods)
Forever 21 (designer knock-offs)

If you want to visit Manhattan, however, LIC might be a better hotel location.

Another Flushing fan. I stayed in the area of the public library branch and found it fascinating. Seemed perfectly safe, and my only regret was seeing so much amazing Chinese food and having so little time to eat it!
