Hi
each person has their own preferences but I usually suggest to out-of-towners that they not stay in the Times Square-Theatre District area. From a local viewpoint, it's one of Manhattan's most hectic, dirty, and noisiest area, good subway connections notwithstanding.
I recommend a quieter neighborhood, that's no more than a 20-minute walk to the theatre.
Just for a few examples, look into eastside hotels in the mid 30s or 40s (that's streets) like the Eastgate,
Shelburne ), Dumont Plaza, Courtyard, but there are many others

Gothampc is correct about the nearby hotels. elaine, however, makes a good point; staying a little uptown makes for a more peaceful stay in general. Since cabs are available 24 hours a day to supplement the safe, convenient subway, I'd go even farther north in Midtown; upper 40s straight up to Central Park would be just fine, IMHO.

To each his own, but personally if I wanted a quiet, peaceful residential neighborhood, I'd stay home!!! Much of the excitement of going to New York is that it is loud, bustling, noisy, and everything else that Times Square provides.

When we go to NY for a theater weekend, we love to stay very close to the theaters (and the jewelry street). Our favorite is the Doubletree Suites at 47th St and 7th Ave. It's elegant and beautiful; if you request an upper floor, it's very quiet.

I have stayed at the Belvedere at 48th and 8th the last 3 times I went for a "theatre weekend" just because it is walking distance from the theatre district. It is not too expensive ($125.00-$175.00) and I find the staff really accomodating.

I hope I don't have this wrong, but I think that theatre is a couple of doors away from the Broadway Inn. We've stayed there twice, and would stay there again.
