Hotel suggestions in a hip section of San Diego

My daughter's who are 25 are meeting in San Diego in early May for 3 nights. They would like to be in a location that is hip and trendy so they can go at at night. Can anyone please provide suggestions for which area's of San Diego would be most suitable along with hotel suggestions. Their budget allows for a hotel price range of $150 - $200~ per night.
Thank you in advance for your help.

They should stay in the Gas Lamp district, no doubt. We have stayed at the Omni and Courtyard [great rooftop bar] - both great locations. SE Hotel is uber hip. Maybe Priceline?

This is a great site, check the logdings and more here:

I second the Gas Lamp recommendation. Lots of restaurants and bars in that area. I've also stayed at the Omni twice and like it very much. There is also a Hard Rock Hotel in that area that looks pretty hip. They should definitely be able to find a good hotel in their price range.

Check out http://www.hotelsolamar.com/

Keep in mind that if they do a Priceline bid they may be sharing a bed and that could be a full or double bed. Hotwire gives you more flexibility re bed types but both are nonrefundable if the plans change.

The Solamar has rates in the price range you listed and would be a fun place for them to stay.

La Jolla is where we like to stay. It is right on the water and it has a pleasing small town atmosphere. HTTY

La Jolla is gorgeous, but "hip"? I too would recommend the Gaslamp area.

Based on your recomendations they have chosen the Gaslamp District and are now looking at the Hotel Solamar and the Hard Rock. Thank you SO much for your suggestions. You made the trip planning much easier!

Just saw a Hard Rock and TV and thought about something. The Hard Rock Hotel in Orlando has a reputation of being a big noisy - music piped in the halls, etc to keep the vibe going. Younger (hipper) co-workers always wanted to stay there but I'd pick the Portofino across the street. When they stayed there they did comment about how noisy it was.

I don't know if the same is true for the Hard Rock in San Diego but thought I'd mention that. Kimpton hotels (Hotel Solamar) have a great vibe without being noisy. Just a thought.
