Your European hotels wrapped the VAT into the room rate. In NYC and NJ the tax is on top of the room rate.

In Jersey City the hotel tax is about 13% and in NYC nearly 14% -- So if you only want to spend $60, you are actually talking about a room rate of $52 or $53.

Simply unrealistic - even using Priceline

I would also suggest looking for apartments to rent on craigslist.

I think it's impossible. I think the only option is your pricerange is a hostel, but forget private bath. The Larchmont is a nice place in a great neighborhood, but I think thinks it's going to run somewhere arund $100, and that's with shared bath.

Maybe on Craigslist you can find someone willing to rent out a room for a few days.

For $50 you can get a very nice garage for your car and if you tip $10 perhaps they will let you sleep in it.

$60 is simply not possible at any time of year - and in December is ridiculous - unless you're looking for a place in which most of the rooms are occupied by the hour. (You can try Priceline if you like - but If you look at biddingfortravel.com you'll see no one is getting prices anywhere near that.)

There is quite a pleasant hostel on 103rd near Amsterdam, which European students seem quite happy with - and I believe a bed in a group room runs about $35-$40 per night. You also get a locker for your belongings.

If you think topping this post will get a different response, forget it! We've given you a pretty accurate picture of your chances of having any success in obtaining a room for $60 with a private bath near a subway station in New York City.

Have done a search for you - perhaps you might try that - and the only "hotel" in NYC listed in your price range in the 92nd St Y. And that's not in December - that's at all for the year.

And unfortunately it's nowhere near a subway stop - and there don;t seem to be private baths.

There are about 8 others listed at under $100 (but I assume they would be more in December), some have private baths but don;t think any is within a block of a subway. Also - as I mentioned - several seem to rent by the hour.

There is a hotel run by the Lutheran Church called Seafarers and International House. It's near Union Square and charges approx. $75 a night for a room with a shared bath. I have never used it but someone on this board has when visiting NYU nearby. You might want to google it.
