If your staying on a weekend, there's a good chance you can get it. Weekends in the summer are their lowest selling season. Just ask nicely!

If weekends are the lowest selling season, why are the rates higher on the weekends?

That's not true. A lot of times, the rates dip significantly for weekends.

I think it depends on whether the hotel is a business hotel versus more of a leisure hotel.

NY hotels reduce their weekend rates from June to Sept.15- and beleive me, they go up significantly after Sept.15-infact, they almost double.
Depending on where you're staying, the chance of an upgrade for the most part is slim as lots of people from out of town hit NYC on weekends due to the lower cost in summer and most rooms get taken--but it doesn't hurt to ask at check-in..in NY they never upgrade you until you ask-it won't be offered.
