A look at The Pierre's website reveals suites (not rooms) for the week before Christmas with Park views that fall within or close to your budget. They are offering a 10% discount for stays of three days or longer, plus a $50 food credit and free continental breakfast for two, and room upgrades if available. NYC hotel tax is 14.75% plus $3.50 per night.

Thank you all so much for your help. The Plaza hotel sounds just what i was looking for. TC - that is a charming idea to give a book - i had never heard of Eloise, i don't think we have those books in England but they look fantastic (even if i am 27!!).

I'd suggest a suite at the LondonNYC, with Gordon Ramsey's restaurants off the lobby. Beautiful views of Manhattan from the upper floors. Great location in walking distance of wonderful restaurants, fabulous shopping, and the theater district. Even close to subway lines for easy travel to Soho and Tribeca.

Laurajay; So glad you like the idea of books. They really do highlight the iconic history of the Plaza. If you are unable to find the books at home, you might order them from Amazon U.S. (with the gift wrap option) have them sent to the Plaza concierge and placed in your room on the day of arrival. I'm certain the concierge could help you set that up.
All that's left is to order your tickets for the Rockette's Christmas show at Radio City Music Hall (Golden Circle seating is the best), schedule a carriage ride through Central Park, pick a time to see the angel tree at the Metropolitan Museum, shop the Christmas Markets in Bryant Park and Union Square and leave lots of time for walking around the city to see the amazing holiday lights and windows. What a wonderful "iconic" birthday. I hope your husband appreciates your efforts. Enjoy!

Just realize that the Plaza is highly overpriced for what you get and that the rooms on lower floors are really dark as they face a nondescript row of office buildings. I think almost everyone urged and begged you to consider a different hotel rather than the Plaza (despite its iconic status). Instead of staying there, go have a meal in the upscale food court and soak in the atmosphere. Stay at the Pierre.
