Hotel recommendation at lake Tahoe?

I am planning a trip that includes Lake Tahoe at the end of July. I would appreciate a recommendation for a hotel/inn.
100-150/night. Should it be in North or south Lake Tahoe? I am coming from SF if that makes a difference. Will stay two nights and hope to drive around the lake visiting historic sites and scenic views.

It will be hard to find a hotel in July for that price, as it is a busy season. You could try the Crown Motel in Kings Beach on the north shore, on the lake. I am not sure of their summer rate, but their ski package has always been good.
We like the north shore best, stay in Incline Village near by.

How far is Lake Tahoe to San Francisco? This time of year at Lake Tahoe, what is there to do? Is there a good shopping area, such as unique shops and antiques? Could you recommend some restaurants, not too high priced. Thanks!

Margo, we like the Inn by the Lake. It is in South Shore and right next door to the Dory's Oar which has fine dining and a casual restaurant also. ***kim***
