hotel pacific grove

We need a bed in Carmel or Pacific Grove for one night. I have considered Asilomar but not sure- the consensus seems to be that you may get a room that isnt that nice and its the grounds that make the place. We won't see much of those as unlikely to arrive whilst still light. Lighthouse Lodge has good and bad reviews, however I cannot reserve online as their website has lapsed.
In Carmel am considering Colonial Terrace Inn as this has some cheapish rooms. The bottom line is I need somewhere quiet and not expensive ie not exceeding $160 a night with breakfast so thought I would see what you extraordinary people could pull out of the hat for me...thanks Hilary

I stayed at Lighthouse lodge and I would not recommend it for even 1 night. It is very much a motel 6 style place. Though they say it is recently renovated we really could not determine what that would have been. Furniture is that plastic coated particle board made to look like wood. Beds are not that great but what bothered me the most was the flimsy door and lock. It's a hollow door. I felt so nervous about that I couldn't relax. Half the rooms look out to the parking lot the other half look over the cemetary.

We stayed at the Best Western Monarch Resort which has a breakfast bar. It was under $100 (we went off season). It has that 70's (no) style architecture but was clean and quiet. The thing I remember most was that the microwave popped every single kernel in the popcorn bag.

Try the Carmel Village Inn, old, typical motel in excellent location, clean and quiet with dated decor and fixtures.

You won't be disappointed with the Colonial Terrace Inn. Would suit your purpose nicely. Lovely grounds, nice breakfast, nice rooms.

PACIFIC GROVE has some great spots. Click on www.pacificgrove.org and review the list. The rates are posted, I believe.

Thats a useful link, it shows availability, too. Which is limited, what we also found out!

Try the Anton Inn on Lighthouse in PG. It does not look impressive from the outside, but the rooms are very nice. We had friends stay there last year and they would use it again. You may be in luck by just calling direct.

Try the Howard Johnson Express just up the street from Asilomar. It is actually a converted condominium that accepts one-night minimum stay. Best to call them direct if possible since they do sometimes offer "manager's specials" that are not announced on the web. http://www.hojomonterey.com/

Asilomar is a good place but pricier than HoJo. The draw are the grounds, access to beach and sitting area. The rooms, however, are sparse. If you do stay there, just don't stay at the "historic" rooms; they are about the size of a closet.

Sounds like Asilomar would fit the bill. We stayed there in July 05 as part of a 3.5 week road trip. The quiet but beautiful oceanfront location and full breakfasts were the best parts.

We stayed at the Carmel Garden court, last summer for my daughter's wedding. Very nice, though our room was small, others were larger (they have just ten rooms). The expanded/ made to order continental breakfast was great. See website:

Their sister inn, the San Antonio House is closer to the beach, and our good friends stayed their and loved it.
