Hotel or B&B in Santa Monica or Venice

I will be visiting family in LA next month and would like to grab a couple of nights to myself at a hotel or B&B in Santa Monica or Venice. I would like to book a room for around 150 a night, any good choices out there? If that amount of money puts me in the Roach Hotel, how much should I plan on dropping?

If you have ideas that are north of those areas (say in Calabasas or Encino) I would welcome them as well, although I would like to stay as far west as possible. The fam is right on the coast.

Exact dates are Aug 15-20. I am flexible on the actual nights (2 consecutive) that I will book because I will be staying with family the rest of the time. Cousins live in Santa Monica and Venice, aunt lives in Caramillo which is why I could possibly stay in Encino or Calabasas, but I would prefer to be in Santa Monica or Venice.

Look at the Sea Shore Motel on Main St in Santa Monica. Friends have stayed there. In your budget and gets good reviews.

I have stayed at the Inn at Venice Beach a few times. It has been recently renovated, offers cheap parking, and free continental breakfast. Ask for a room overlooking the inner courtyard. It's a Pacifica property. We also like the Jamaica Bay Inn, at Marina del Rey. They are close to your budget, maybe a bit over it.

I checked the Pacifica Hotels, and the cheapest rate is $229 for the Inn at Venice Beach. At least it includes a continental breakfast. Mid-August looks expensive anywhere in Santa Monica.

Watch out re that Holiday Inn. I have stayed there 1.5 yrs ago and it can be a problem re the management and cleanliness of the room, and noise ( Santa Monica Blvd). My room was, frankly, skanky, pubic hair on the bathoom floor and toilet, which I requested they come and clean but it never happened, stained and dirty carpet, dirty telephone, etc.

Hi again,
yodababe, I will be interested to see what you decide upon.
We have been to LA many times and always stay in the big hotels.
We are flying over from Australia on the 21st of Dec and have a few nights at Loews Hollywood ( like the location of this place ) and then we will have a few nights on the way back to Australia at the end of January. ((Just looking for somewhere a little different )Will check out the suggestions given.
Thanks

We stayed at the Sheraton Delfino and liked it a lot. You can easily walk from there to the beach, a couple of blocks away.

For a splurge, Magpies, The Shutters is a fabulous hotel on the beach. Great restaurants there, too.

My best friend, who was my work colleague for many yrs and who is also my boss now on many consulting jobs, lives in Santa Monica, so I have spent many many trips going out there for work and then i often stay through a weekend on my own dime. I've stayed at the Sheraton Delfina many times also, and like it very much. Have also stayed at the Doubletree, Shutters many times, and Casa del Mar next to Shutters, and the Ritz Carlton at Marina del Ray, and that large hotel by the pier, used to be the Fairmont. All lovely hotels but I think they are probably out of the OP's price range.

I once sat next to Pierce Brosnan and his wife at the oceanfront cafe at Shutters. My best celebrity sighting, lol. I don't recall what I had for lunch, just how gorgeous he was. BTW, that cafe is wonderful, esp At Happy Hour, and they have a good raw bar also. you can sit at the bar and watch the people on the oceanfront walkway and then the beach and water beyond. have seen several weddings towards sunset on the beach sitting at that bar.

Also really like Lula's on Main St., ESP at happy hr in the bar when they have reduced price small plates and margaritas. It is authentic Mexican food, everyone who works there is from MX and the owner is from Oaxaca. it shows in the food, and they have a fantastic selection of mescals.

I know you didn't ask for food recs, but I love Santa Monica and it feels like a 2nd home when I go there. I am fortunate my friend and client lives and works there.

emd3, we love Coast, also. It's great to sit outside and watch the surf as you dine. Have taken many college kids there!
