Hotel or Apartment
We are staying in SF for 5 nights (very long flight) and wonder if our options may be better with Apartment as this will probably provide a Washer/Drier, kitchen, etc. Can you recommend any really nice 2 bedroom ones? We are 4 British adults, want good location - 2 pensioners, so not on too steep hill (they can manage, we can't!)Safety of area is No1 concern.
Have heard F. Wharf area is bad with street gangs, how true is this - because we keep leaning towards that area when choosing hotels?
Has anyone stayed at Orchard or Andrews Hotel? Which area are they and what are they like seem good value for money. We would love somewhere with a view.

Fisherman's Wharf is rather touristy, and as such would not be my first place to stay. I have not heard of gangs in this area of SF. Gang activity has been known to occur more in the downtown/Market Street area.
In terms if the Orchard and Andrew Hotels, the properties themselves are not too bad, but the Union Square/downtown location is not the best at night.

My favorite place in San Francisco -- Cow Hollow Suites, just 12 very nice and beautfully furnished apartments, and only about half of those are two bedroom. Will run about $250 per night for one of those, but has a wonderful kitchen and two baths, plus laundry room in the hall. It's in the popular Marina or Cow Hollow District (no hills) and half a block to the bus stop where you catch a bus to Fisherman's Wharf, North Beach, Chinatown, Union Square, or Market Street. No safety concern whatsoever in that neighborhood.
415-921-5800, but sorry they don't have a website and don't think they accept bookings through agencies. You'd need to call them direct.

I think your best bet would be to bid for a room using priceline.com. Since you are from the UK, you can use Priceline's UK website. Then you can get 2 separate rooms, with 2 bathrooms; that makes it easier in the morning.
You can get the Hyatt Regency for about $50/nt. At that price, 2 rooms still only cost about $100/nt - a VERY good value!
Check out www.biddingfortravel.com for information on priceline bidding.

I haven't heard about or seen any gang activity in the FW area either. It's pretty touristy, but I don't think it's unsafe. The area known as the Tenderloin, which is a few blocks west of Union Square has problems, as do the area south of Market around 6th and the Mission District. The Mission District has some interesting things to see and is fine during the day time. The other 2 areas should probably just be avoided. There isn't really anything to take you there anyway.
