Hotel options

We'll be going to Hawaii next April, and right now I'm looking at 3 different hotels: the Outrigger Waikiki, the Alohilani, and the Hyatt Regency Waikiki. Ocean-front rooms for all, but the Hyatt views probably come with high floors (don't like heights!). We like a fairly up-to-date room with a good bathroom; so if you have recommendations, I would appreciate them greatly. We'll be landing on my husband's birthday, which is why we're splurging. We don't swim--don't care about a pool, but like to walk on the beach. A lanai is a must! Thanks for any ideas.

There are no "ocean front" rooms at the Hyatt, as it is across the street from the beach. The Alohilani also appears to be across the street from the beach ( I didn't know that hotel, so looked it up - you can see on Booking.com that there is a street between it and the water). The Outrigger Reef, however, is right on the beach. So if being ocean front is important to you, the only one of the three that is true ocean front is the Outrigger. The others will have good views of the beach and the ocean,

I prefer the Outrigger Reef to Outrigger Waikiki (for a slightly quieter location by Fort de Russy park).

As above the other two are not actually beach-FRONT. Alohilani was formerly the "Pacific Beach Hotel".

Thanks. I'll have a look at the Outrigger Reef. Quiet is good!

Quiet is relative in Waikiki :-)

FYI, I had a brainstorm since I couldn't decide on the hotel: stay at 2 different ones! So we'll have part of the time at the Outrigger Waikiki and the final 3 days at the Royal Hawaiian. Love those senior rates.

I'll be interested in your trip report given your hotel choices.

Underhill, I love the Royal Hawaiian and have stayed there a number of times. I much prefer its location in the middle of Waikiki over the location of the Outrigger Reef.

Well of course the Royal Hawaiian is a MUCH nicer hotel!! But when people ask for hotels in a certain price point (like the 3 in the OP here). I wouldn't think to recommend Halekulani -lol-

Kathie Oct 19th, 2018 10:04 AM

Nor I, Suze. But it sounds like the senior rates at the Royal Hawaiian made in in range for Underhill.

Underhill Oct 20th, 2018 08:10 AM

Indeed--and no deposit, either. FYI, for the other half of our stay we'll be at the Outrigger Waikiki, not the Reef.

I did look at the Halekulani, just for fun, and surprisingly found some negative reviews. That's not what I would have expected; I suppose some people just have very grand expectations and are easily disappointed.

Kathie Oct 20th, 2018 03:26 PM

Ah, both of your hotels will be in the middle of Waikiki. Great location!

joethebear Oct 20th, 2018 03:39 PM

What kind of rates are you talking about?

My kids want to go next year so I am starting to read threads. I am the family trip planner/advisor. I think its because I enjoy reading/researching.

Underhill Oct 21st, 2018 10:23 AM

Senior rates, but the AAA ones weren't bad either.

nanabee Oct 21st, 2018 02:59 PM

For retired or those in the military there is the Hale Koa which is right on the beach in Waikiki at reduced rates as well.

for Joethebear~ Not on topic for this thread but if your "kids" are looking for a nice but more economical place to stay I can recommend Waikiki Sand Villa.
