Hotel New York

Hi there,

I am looking for a cheap hotel in New York from the 16th till the 18th or 19th May. As I'm going to be on my own and Ive never been to the city I'd rather stay somewhere safe and possibly central! Ill be willing to pay up till 60-70 USD per night.

Many thanks!

Cristina

That price will probably prove to be unrealistic. Thats the week of college graduations too, I believe.

You should consider bidding Priceline or a hostel.

You're not going to get any hotel at that price in NYC - or even the close-in suburbs. I think you'll have aproblem even in the far distant suburbs, which would be traveling at least an hour each way -plus paying for train or bus fare.

You can check biddingfortravel.com to see if anyone is getting hotels on Priceline for that amount - and see what they are. The problem is that one you bid you have to pay, even if youhate the hotel. But I don't know if you'll get that even on Priceline.

You can also check hotwire or travelzoo - but doubt yo'll find anything. (And remember the price they quote will have 18% tax on top of it.)

You can get a bed with locker in a dorm room in a hostel for $35 to $40 per night. Check out Hosteling International or the Big Apple Hostel (I think is the name).

I didnt even get that out in Flushing last year for a night after a Mets game.

xtina81 - you're tagging your questions 'trip report.' That's a label for an actual report of a trip that someone wants to post after they've traveled.

Agree with the others. The only way to get anything close to that price is to stay in a hostel in a dorm room or possibly you could find a private room with shared bath at that price. >bigapplehostel.com is centrally located
>The Vanderbilt YMCA has private rooms and dorms
>the Westside YMCA ditto
There are some women's residences that might have room.
>The Brandon on the upper west side is supposed to be good and includes some meals.
>Leo House is a guest house run by nuns in Chelsea (good location). You can get your own bathroom there if they have space. There's no website or email. You have to phone or fax.

>citylightsnewyork.com might have a hosted apartment (you stay in someone's apt but have your own room)

You might consider staying outside Manhattan and your budget will go further. Where outside depends on how you're travelling.

Many thanks to all for taking the time to reply!

Mclaurie-Thanks so much for all the suggestions, I think im gonna go either with Vanderbilt YMCA or Westside YMCA, both have private room with shared bathroom and are within my budget!

Thanks

Cristina

Both are well located. The Westside Y has an indoor pool that you can use if you stay there. Don't know if that will sway your choice. Have heard upper floors are nicer/newer renovation there.
