Hotel near the USTA Centre
 

Hello:

We are visiting the US opens in Sep 08. Can someone please recommend a good reasonably priced hotel in the area (under $220 or am I dreaming). I understand from this website that Queens isn't the best of areas. The hotels I find on tripadvisor are over 350$ or in seedy neighbourhoods. We will be attending both the day and night sessions and dont want to commute too much.

Queens is huge with many nice areas, but the hotels are in the seedier ones. I would try to find a deal on a hotel near Grand Central and take the #7 train that goes right to the tennis center. The train is safe and will have people on it at all hours during the Open.

Most hotels in Queens are either for/and near one of the airports - or not for tourists (for homeless or ent by thehour). And, if you stay n Quens you wil need to have a car to drive back/forth inhideous traffic and pay huge parking fees.

Agree you're much better off stayin in Manhattan near the 7 train -whcih will take you to the stadium.

At $220 you will be searchng very hard - that's a busy time and many people come to town for the open - and might want to consider a B&B or a place with a shared bath. Assuming you are 2 and can share a bed you can consider biding on Priceline - but I would have a cancellable back-up reserved - since you might ot get much until close tothe date. If you're willing to make a little more effort in order to save some $$$, one year I stayed in Weehawken (NJ) and took a ferry over to Manhattan and ultimately caught the #7 train. It was a bit more work, but the Sheraton Suites at Lincoln Harbor is a decent hotel with decent rates. (My sister happened to live in Hoboken at the time, so it was convenient for other reasons as well.)

You already might be too late to get the "good" hotel bargains for the US Open. I wouldn't restrict my options too much....and the $220 figure might be a very tough goal to reach.

I think the only hotel near the tennis center and also near a subway stop is the Holiday Inn La Guardia and you will pay a fortune for a very ordinary hotel. You should be able to find a hotel in Manhattan anywhere near a #7 train (runs along 42 st.) that would work. There's also Long Island Railroad service from Penn station to the Tennis Center and that's frankly better than the subway.

If you're coming at the beginning of the tournament over the Labor Day weekend, you'll find lots of deals. If you're coming later, not likely. The Eastgate Tower, one of the Affinia hotels not far from Grand Central is under $250 on quikbook.com (and maybe also on the hotel's website). Millenium UN Plaza is too. It's a bit further to the subway stop, but probably nicer hotel and nice views. Even the Bryant Park hotel which is pretty glamorous is just under $250 for Labor Day weekend (again on quikbook). The Affinia Dumont is nearish Penn station and is also a good price for Labor Day.

We stayed at the holiday inn La Guardia and it surpassed expectations. Room, housekeeping, cleandiness, reception staff, restaurant was all great. Best of all, it is in fact a 10-12 min walk to the USTA Arthur Ashe Stadium. Yes, it works if all one wants to do is be at the Open - nothing else around there but that is all i wanted.
