Hotel near Stratford, Milford, New Haven, etc

Hi-
We're traveling from Newark to Boston and need a nice place to stay somewhere about 1-2 hours from Newark. Looks like Stratford, or New Haven would be that point. Any suggestions on nice places to stay; somewhere with a little scenery, nice restaurants. Thanks so much in advance!

I can't help with a hotel, but can suggest that you drive a better route than the one you're taking. By your request, I assume you are driving I-95 or the Merritt Parkway in Connecticut to New Haven and then up I-91 in Hartford connecting to I-84.
Instead, take in NY to 684 to I-84 in NY and continue on 84 to and thru Hartford. You'll save at least a half hour and will avoid the dreaded I-95!

If you take the route that Howard is taking you, you could stop at the Marriott in Farmington, CT. It is right off the highway. If you felt like having a great dinner, check out Apricot's, also in Farmington. Farmington is a nice New England town. You would still have about a 2 1/2 hour drive to Boston from there. Follow 84 to Sturbridge, Mass. where you would pick up 90 - the Mass Pike. 90 will take you right into Boston.

I'll agree with scs about the Marriott in Farmington, which just about halfway between Newark and Boston, following the directions I gave previously.

HowardR...if you're still there...our plans have changed and we are now driving from Newark to Milford, CT...would your driving recommendations still apply? Still best to avoid 95? Thanks so much!

If you are interested in a beautiful B&B on the Milford Green look at http://www.bbonline.com/ct/rainbow/index.html . Rainbow Gardens in very nice and has a great dining room as well. Nicely located on the Milford Green. Several nice restaurants within walking distance and many within a 10 minute drive. Easy access to Merritt Parkway and I-95. My personal choice would be to come up the Merritt. Walking distance to Milford Harbor. Good luck.

No, the same directions do apply. For Milford, you must take either the Merritt Parkway or I-95 to Milford. I strongly recommend the Merritt!

A few good restaurants to try in Milford: Conti's and Gusto's (both on the Post Rd.) for Italian, and Citrus, which is right off the green. If you're in the mood for something more casual like burgers and buffalo wings, Archie Moore's is also right off the green.
