hotel monaco portland or
Looking at this hotel. notice it doens't include breakfast. any places to eat nearby? (the restaurant listed on the site doesn't seem to have a very basic breakfast menu - eg cereal and coffe or bage and tea etc.).
also are the pets an issue - in terms of odor in the rooms. not a pet person. and noise? thanks. looks like a great hotel otherwise |
No, Breakfast is not included although it is great, from the Red Star Tavern connected to the hotel.
On 2nd and Stark ( Monaco is on 5th..out the hotel door, turn right, cross the street, walk to 2nd, turn left) is Mothers. Best Best Breakfast!! There are small cafes and Starbucks all around the hotel. If you want to go a little farther..walk or take the streetcar to 9th and Couch - The Pearl Bakery. I could weep with longing for their cappucino and giblasier .. Pets...they stay on the 3rd floor. Even on that floor ( we have stayed there a few times with out dog and a few without) you cannot smell or hear pets. I always feel like we are the only ones with a dog there. It is a Very nice hotel..you will see, it would not have an odor of anything..dirty people or dogs lol. Only noise I ever noticed was once.. a little over 2 years ago, you could hear some sort of altercation on the street. But within the hotel..nothing. We always ask for a high floor and stay in the King Suites. Lovely. The bathrooms are great too :) |
Before the spelling or typo police come after me lol it is Gilbasier..

It's a great hotel. You will love it. And I also loved the Red Star Tavern. It isn't your typical hotel restaurant -- more like a standalone with local food. Delicious.

I was just there this past weekend--it's my favorite hotel in Portland.
It looks like the pet question has already been answered. I finally tried Mother's this weekend and it was very good. My other favorite breakfast place in the area is the Bijou Cafe on 2nd. Both places have long lines on the weekends so go early or be prepared to wait. When are you going? The one small quibble I had was there was noise from a jackhammer at one of the many construction sites in the area during the day, including on the weekend (downtown Portland looks like one big construction site these days, there are so many projects going on!). So if you're going soon, you'd probably want to ask to be put in a room facing Washington Street. Hopefully the jackhammer phase will be done soon however. |
The Red Star is very good. Mothers is too, and about a block from there is Lorn and Dotties which is great for breakfast.
Even though we live here, we have stayed at the Monaco several times and pets are not an issue. |
If you book at the following, breakfast and parking are included: http://www.travelportland.com/

The Monaco has specials occassionally. Look at the Kimpton website and look for Hot Dates Great Rates.
The POVA website that was mentioned has their Big Deal with breakfast and parking, but we have often gotten the same, or better rate, when we book directly with the hotel. This fall the Monaco was full so we settled for the Heathman and got the same special by booking directly. So you never know, but it doesn't hurt to ask. |
If you have stayed in any other Kimpton hotel, they give some sort of discount too, I think. We have a Kimpton card so we always got a bit off of our room rate..and staying longer ( more than a week ) helps.
